Pennsylvania GOP Tries to ‘Cancel’ Academics Critical of Racial Theory, Critics Point out

A Pennsylvania bill to prevent the teaching of critical race theory in schools would also seek to prohibit universities from hosting lecturers or assigning readings that discuss certain ideas.

Pennsylvania’s House Bill 1532 was introduced earlier this month, and it seeks to ban the teaching of concepts Republican lawmakers “trace to critical race theory,” writes the Philadelphia Inquirer. The bill received new attention on Friday after Acadia University lecturer Jeffrey Sachs took it further on Twitter, writing that “not only does it prohibit universities from promoting any of the usual banned concepts, but it also prohibits them from hosting lecturers or assigning readings that do so. ”

This new anti-CRT bill from Pennsylvania is * unbelievable *. Not only does this prohibit universities from promoting any of the usual prohibited concepts, but it also prohibits them from hosting speakers or assigning readings that do. / xC6Ah11Jid

The bill states that post-secondary institutions must not “host, pay for or provide a venue for a speaker who espouses, advocates or promotes a racist or sexist concept” or assigns “learning material which espouses, advocates or promotes a racist or sexist concept ”. He defines these concepts as including ideas such as “an individual, by reason of race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist or oppressive”, that “an individual, by reason of race or sex, bears responsibility for acts committed in the past by members of the race or sex of the individual “, that” an individual should receive favorable treatment because of his race or sex “and that” the United States America or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are fundamentally racist or sexist ”.

Atlantic’s David French criticized the law as “patently unconstitutional” while NBC News’ Benjy Sarlin wrote: “Remember when students blocking controversial speakers was the big story 10 Culture Wars ago? Either way, here’s a bill to ban speakers who advocate something so controversial as affirmative action. “Vox co-founder Matthew Yglesias echoed the sentiment, writing : “The culture cancellation discourse has really come full circle,” adding that “the idea that a university should be banned from assigning students a putatively racist text to read for any reason is profoundly problematic. ”
