Always: really sorry

A family law lawyer has been suspended from the innovative company she founded after being accused of making racist comments about the new royal baby.

In a statement posted to Twitter yesterday, the Family Law Caf board said it had suspended Joanna Toch with immediate effect pending an internal review of her recent comments on Twitter.

He continued: FLC views his comments as offensive, unacceptable and highly contradictory to the inclusive manner in which FLC has always and will continue to work with members of all communities to manage the challenges of marital and family disputes.

Ms Toch responded to a tweet from controversial writer Julie Burchill, who described the name of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s new baby, Lilibet Diana, as a missed opportunity. Referring to George Floyd, she said: They could have called her Georgina Floydina!

Mrs. Toch replied: No Doria? Don’t black names matter? Doria Ragland is the mother of Meghan Markles.

Ms Burchill replied that she hoped for Doria Oprah, the racist rots, to which Ms Toch replied: Doprah?

The exchange drew fierce criticism on social media, with several sharing the complaint process with the Bar Standards Board.

Ms Toch later wrote on Twitter: I’m so sorry for the comment and what I saw as a joke. I fought during my professional life against racism which is odious. I am not a judge [some Twitter users had said she was] and I have colored children and I apologize wholeheartedly.

In a subsequent tweet, she added: It was a joke and I’m sorry if I upset you.

Her Twitter account has now been deleted, as has Ms. Burchill’s.

The Family Law Bar Association tweeted today: Comments on Twitter about the Sussex newborn have been brought to our attention. Since one of the persons is a member of the family bar, we have written to the person and refer the exchanges to the BSB, the Bar Council and other relevant bodies.

We point out that the FLBA condemns the comments of the individual which are totally inappropriate and have no place in our society. Racism of any kind cannot be tolerated and cannot be justified as a joke.

The Family Law Caf was started by Ms. Toch with lawyer-turned-financier Peter Tahany, who are listed at Companies House as the only two directors. It was uploaded in 2017.

Users are first contacted by a host for a free initial consultation. They are then referred to a forwarder, lawyer or lawyer with experience in family law who determines the best way to move the case forward.
