Jose Mourinho’s criticism of Frank de Boer has come true as Netherlands pull out of Euro 2020

Jose Mourinho may have watched with a smile as the Netherlands suffered a shock exit from Euro 2020.

The Czech Republic got the better of Frank de Boer’s men with two goals in the second half, although they were underdogs to win.

The Dutch team generated a lot of excitement, participating in their first major tournament since the 2014 World Cup, but they fell short of expectations for the tournament.

National team manager De Boer was appointed in September 2020 and once put himself on the wrong side of Mourinho while working as an expert for BT Sport.

Speaking in 2018, he described it as a “shame” that Mourinho was Manchester United manager as he failed to get the most out of Marcus Rashford.

“It’s a shame the manager is Mourinho because normally he’s an English player, you want to give him time and then he can make mistakes. But Mourinho is not like that, he wants to get results. ‘he has a bad game or two, he kicks him out,’ De Boer said.

“He’s very young, he needs games, he’s so talented. You want to see this player every week.

The former United boss responded to this claim from the Dutchman and quickly put an end to his claims.

De Boer suffered a nightmare at Crystal Palace in 2017, being sacked after just five games in charge – something Mourinho was keen to point out.

“I read a few quotes from the worst manager in Premier League history: Frank de Boer.

“What he was saying is [it is] not good for Marcus Rashford to have a coach like me, because the most important thing for me is to win.

“If he were coached by Frank he would learn to lose because he lost every game.”

Palace lost their first four Premier League games of the 2017/18 season under De Boer, not having scored any of the games.

And it was another moment for the 51-year-old to forget, this time on the international stage as the Netherlands return home after Euro 2020.
