Luke Shaw admits he was baffled by Jose Mourinho’s latest criticisms of him and says his former Manchester United manager “needs to move on”.
The relationship between the two during Mourinho’s tenure at Old Trafford was often strained, with Shaw being negatively singled out on more than one occasion.
The 25-year-old has never beaten Mourinho but got his career back on track after his dismissal in December 2018 and regained his place in the England squad, starting the last two matches of Euro 2020.
Three years later, Mourinho is still pointing fingers at the left-back, calling his set piece in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over the Czech Republic “very bad” and “extremely bad”.

Shaw feels that Mourinho, who spoke in his role as radio expert during Euro 2020, was unfairly targeting him, but insists he’s not bothered, focusing on manager Gareth Southgate’s comments .
“I don’t really understand, to be honest,” he said. “I don’t know why he keeps going and wants to point the finger at me. I don’t feel the set pieces were as bad as he said they were.
“Maybe I did one in the second half, a corner, which didn’t go past the first man. But it was one in three. The other two or three, I don’t think, were too “dramatically bad” as he puts it.
“Look, he has to do his job. He has his opinion. I’m used to him saying negative things about me now, so I’m just passing it off. I leave it, I ignore it. I focus. just what the coaching staff is saying here, what Gareth is saying and that’s it, really.
“His voice is obviously very loud. He really enjoys talking about me, as everyone has seen him recently. But his voice is his. He can say whatever he wants.

“I’m going to focus on myself. I’m taking set pieces at United so it wasn’t like this was something I wasn’t ready for.”
Shaw revealed that his England team-mates even noticed that he appeared to be unduly criticized by Mourinho and suggested that the best days of managing the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss may now be behind him.
“There is no hiding place that we did not understand,” he added.
“I think he was a brilliant manager but, you know, the past is the past. It’s time to move on. I’m trying to move on but obviously he can’t.
“He keeps talking about me, which I find quite strange. Even some of the guys have been like ‘what’s wrong with him?’ and “why does he keep talking?”
“He just needs to move on. I hope he can find his peace with this and finally move on and stop worrying about me. Clearly I’m a lot in his head and he’s thinking clearly. a lot to me. “
0:32 Sky Germany’s Uli Kohler says it will be good for Germany if Jadon Sancho doesn’t start for England against them on Tuesday, and the Borussia Dortmund forward is in better shape than Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford
Mourinho was named Roma’s new head coach in May after an 18-month stint at Tottenham, but has spoken as a radio expert throughout his coverage of Euro 2020.
When asked if he could laugh at any new criticism now, Shaw added, “Yeah, because I don’t think any of you realize the two or three years I spent with it. him and how it was then, how it was then.
“What he’s saying now is nothing compared to what he used to be. I’m totally honest. I’m so overwhelmed now. I’ve grown a lot.
“The three years I spent with him, I learned a lot. I find it easy to ignore him now and even laugh at him. But it is better to ignore him and move on with my life.”
1:11 Former England striker Alan Smith says there might not be a better opportunity than now for Gareth Southgate’s side to gain the upper hand over Germany
Instead of looking back, Shaw is only interested in preparations for the round of 16 game between England and Germany on Tuesday night.
“It would be amazing,” he said when asked what it would mean to beat his former rivals.
“Not just for us as players, but for the whole nation to see it would be great. Of course what has happened in the past is the past.
“But we as the players, as a team want to make our own story and you know what’s the best way to start that by beating Germany on Tuesday hopefully and setting the tone for the rest. of the tournament. “
