“It’s no secret. I mean, there has been some criticism the last few years.”
It didn’t take long for Conor Murray to step up from world class to world class after bursting onto the testing scene. It took him nine months – the 2012 New Zealand summer tour – and he’s been there for eight consecutive years.
2019 and 2020 saw him return to the peloton. Munster and Ireland still had a proven player who could control big games, but part of the spark was gone.
The big change was that Murray didn’t do as many snipes and carries as before. Neck and shoulder injuries, dating back to 2017 and never fully healed, played a big part in this. Murray himself admits it.
With Andy Farrell watching Jamison Gibson-Park and John Cooney, in 2020 Conor Murray’s aura was fading. He was no longer untouchable. Indeed, there was a 10 minute spell, in October 2020, when Garry Ringrose will be the emergency scrum half and show Irish fans what they were missing in a high-cadence snipers cameo. .
Murray was gradually coming back in shape and in confidence with Munster. Farrell rewarded him with a start against Wales, but an injury caused him to miss the next two games. His most disturbing moment came when he was called back to the bench for the victory over Scotland but not used at all.
Murray had his chance against England and played a big part in a landslide Irish victory. Six weeks later he made his third Lions team. Six weeks later, he is now the captain of the Lions tour.
On his appearance at House of Rugby [LISTEN from 8:45 below], last month, Murray spoke about rediscovering his confidence, form and inner fire.
“This Lions tour was something I really wanted,” Murray said. “On the last tour I really enjoyed it. I played good rugby.
“In my head, obviously, you plan it when you watch World Cups and other events. For example, ‘I’ll be 32, will I still be in the spotlight?’
“I wasn’t really thinking that far away, but the closer it got … The criticism [I received], absolutely. It’s not a secret. I mean, there have been reviews over the last couple of years. It frustrated me sometimes, because I didn’t agree with a lot of things. But then, I wanted to prove them wrong, even if they didn’t tell the right story! It was a great motivation for me.
“And then when the Lions year comes around, you start to think about it again.”
Murray spoke about the moment in the Irish squad’s hotel in March when the Lions sent members of the Irish squad the 2021 Canterbury jerseys for headshots, in case they made the final cup .
Looking at himself in the mirror, with that Lions logo on his chest, Murray figured he would do whatever he could to make that plane to South Africa.
What helped Murray in this pursuit was to feel more confident in his neck. There had been two separate spells, and he admits that the hurt may have been in the back of his mind.
“I honestly do [feel in the best shape]”he commented.” The neck is always the one for me, and it’s something that luckily I put to bed.
“I had a few hits on it over the last season and it didn’t really affect me. So I definitely went through this rehab process to build my strength, build my upper body strength a bit more. , and have real confidence to go out and play the way I play.
“For me, it’s things like the short-distance tries that I score, which aren’t too glamorous! These were things I was supporting myself with, just being physically able to cross the five-meter try line. from a distance, or whatever.
“You know, maybe subconsciously over the last couple of seasons, I’d be afraid of getting hurt. You tell yourself you’re not, but I could just throw the ball at someone else and hope. that he would … last year or so I saw myself doing this a lot more, like I did before.
“Having the confidence to play my natural game like this, I know there are loads of other parts that you have to sort through as well, but on that side, I feel really good.”
Anyone who has watched a lot of Munster games this season will agree with these comments from Murray. He’s an offensive threat again. Opposition teams can no longer count on him to pass the ball and this, in turn, makes defenses more difficult to organize. Leinster and Ulster can attest to this – Murray scored three tries in two games against them in April.
Murray is coming back to his best. It remains to be seen what the captain will do for him, but he has plenty of other leaders on the team to lean on.
It’s been a few wild months, and the next couple could be even wilder.
