Kashmiri clergyman refutes allegations of forced conversion of Sikh girls to Islam

Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema JK (MMU) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has refuted some media claims that two local Sikh girls were forcibly converted to Islam in order to get married.

Given the sensitivity of the issue, a high-level MMU delegation led by senior leader Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moswi Al-Safwi at the suggestion of the incarcerated Mirwaiz, met with members of the local Sikh community as well as members by Shiromani. Akali Dal to find out about the issue, which had caused anguish in the local Sikh community, and to resolve it amicably.

According to a statement released to the local Kashmir News Observer (KNO) news agency, Majlis-e-Ulema made it clear that Islam is a religion of peace, tolerance and harmony; and that there is absolutely no place for coercion or force in Islam.

He actually gave freedom of religion to anyone who is sane and mature. But if someone willingly wants to accept Islam, it’s a matter of choice, he says.

The MMU delegation, while speaking to the Sikh delegations, said that these issues can be mutually resolved in a cordial atmosphere between members of the two communities.

However, he added that we have to be careful and cautious as some outside elements deliberately want to undermine the age-old atmosphere of religious tolerance and harmony that exists in Kashmir; and create a wedge between the communities living here, which should not be allowed at all.

MMU delegates assured the Kashmiri Sikh community that Kashmiri Muslims share all sorrows and happiness with them and according to Islamic teaching it is their responsibility to protect minorities, said the Majlis-e- Ulema.

“Members of the local Sikh community thanked MMU members for their comfort and awareness,” the statement said. (After-sales service)
