The increase in crime across the country has Democrats on the defense. In the summer of 2020, Democrats across the country embraced the idea of funding the police. Now that the devastating consequences are starting to manifest, they are backing down. Not only that, they are trotting a new line of attack to deflect the blame.
The White House is trying to regain control of the fight against crime by accusing Republicans of funding the police.
Biden’s aide Cedric Richmond fired the first volley on Fox News on Sunday when he said congressional Republicans who voted against a $ 350 billion plan to help cities had refused money to the police.
“Let’s talk about who funded the police, when we were in Congress last year trying to pass a bailout, I mean an emergency back-up plan for cities running out of money and laying off police officers. and firefighters, it was the Republicans who opposed it, “said Richmond.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki doubled down on her strategy on Monday. “As you know, he did not receive any Republican votes. This funding was used to keep the cops on the job,” she said.
The problem is, while some cities have used these funds to bolster police services during COVID, the US bailout did not include specific funding to hire more police officers.
Meanwhile, Democratic leaders in cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Baltimore, and New York, have actually cut or withheld tens of millions of dollars from police departments, resulting in layoffs and a peak of officers leaving the force.
And it’s still happening. In Oakland, California, city council recently voted to cut the police budget by $ 17 million.
“So we see clearly that crime is out of control in the city of Oakland and our response has been to cut police resources,” said Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong. “Without the resources, it is difficult to secure Oakland, and more and more families are facing trauma.”
And crime rates are skyrocketing in the United States. 37 cities saw an 18% increase in murders in the first three months of 2021, including a 58% jump in Atlanta and more than 500% in Portland.
Several large cities are backing down and seeking to reinstate tens of millions of dollars that they had cut or withheld from the police force.
But Rep. Jim Banks (R-Indiana) says it will take more than restoring funds to replenish our nation’s police force.
“When Rep. Omar says the police are rooted in evil and Nancy Pelosi compares cops to Nazi stormtroopers, it’s very difficult for police departments across the country to recruit police,” Banks said. “It’s more difficult to recruit people to become police officers. “
Political analysts say police funding was one of the main reasons Democrats suffered heavy losses in the House in 2020, and it remains to be seen whether the rise in crime will have a similar impact in 2022.
