SACRAMENTO (KOVR) – The Kit Carson International Academy includes grades 7 to 12. Two weeks ago, older people graduated on the same day a recording was taken from a teacher, sources tell us. within the Sacramento City Unified School District, used derogatory language in front of students.
Audio recording: And now it’s like the word (n-word) that everyone says or (n-word.)
Sources within the Sacramento City Unified School District sent CBS13 the audio they claim is of a Spanish teacher at the school using racist words in front of students. It was graduation day and the class was discussing the language
Audio recording: think of the words that make things cheap.
And then she gives an example.
Audio recording: I know the F word is something we hear all the time. It used to be a bad word. And now it’s like the word (n-word) that everyone is saying or (n-word.)
The students in the class were shocked.
Audio recording: who said it wasn’t a horrible word?
We spoke to Sacramento youth leader Berry Accius, who has mentored students at Kit Carson in the past.
How don’t you say the f word? but then you are comfortable saying the term both ways. The GA and the RE, says Accius, referring to the reluctance of teachers to use the F word and the ease of use of the N word.
Audio recording: I know the F word is something we hear all the time. It used to be a bad word. And now it’s like the word (n-word) that everyone is saying or (n-word.)
There should be no instance where an educator should be so comfortable using a derogatory term, Accius said.
CBS13 contacted the school district to ask them about the recording. They sent us a statement which included an apology to the students in that class who may have heard this language.
We asked Accius if an apology was enough.
Apologies are not enough; show were not going to accept this kind of behavior, Accius said.
The Sacramento City Unified School District is aware of the registration. They sent CBS13 a written statement stating:
Our district condemns racism in all its forms, which harms our students, our families and our community. We understand that there is a recording of one of our teachers making racist and derogatory statements in the presence of their students. The statements made on the recording are inexcusable and we are deeply sorry that our students have heard this language. Upon reporting the incident, the site administration responded by providing classroom support and directly addressing student concerns. Our district takes these kinds of concerns very seriously. While we cannot comment further on this incident or related personnel issues, the District continues to review this matter and will take appropriate action.
CBS13 contacted the director of Kit Carson International Academy to find out if he was aware of the recording and what the teacher’s status was. We have not had an answer.
