Nickholas Grant, PhD, was the 2021 recipient of the Community Psychology Graduate Student Award for Anti-Racist Praxis from the Society for Community Research and Action, Division 27 of the American Psychological Association.
Grant completed his doctoral fellowship in Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry with internships at the West Haven Counseling Center and Mental Health Center. Grant received his doctorate in clinical and community psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He will remain at Yale for a T-32 Postdoctoral Fellowship in Substance Abuse Prevention in the Department’s Prevention and Community Research Division.
Grant’s participatory action research thesis, #PowerUp, examines sites of resilience to gun violence, centering African-American youth and conceptualizing resilience as a characteristic of the community itself. He has supported a community-university partnership with oppressed communities through several community-based research and evaluation projects. His commitment to anti-racism practice extends to his work within the university taking leadership in supporting the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as the Department of Psychiatry at Yale for address equity in their programs. Antiracist praxis was applied in the classroom by implementing an empancipatory pedagogical approach and by encouraging students to think structurally.
