SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KOVR) – Students and parents have spoken out after CBS13 first played an audio recording of a Spanish teacher in Sacramento using racist language in front of students.

Seventh-grade Spanish teacher Katherine Sanders said the n-word twice, saying it was okay to use it in casual conversations. Students can be heard, upset in the recording.

I know the f word is something we hear all the time. It used to be a bad word and now it’s like the word (n-word) everyone says or (n-word) Catherine Sanders.

I wasn’t sure what to say, said one student we spoke to who was in the Spanish class. She was uncomfortable walking past the camera, nervous for the negative response from her classmates and teachers, but she wanted to be heard.

In my head I was like wow I’ve been called the n-word before so it didn’t affect me like I was crying my eyes but it was still sad, a Kit Carson student said

They were confused after Ms Sanders claimed she was okay with using the word because others do.

Where I live, I hear it all the time, Ms. Sanders says in the audio recording obtained by CBS13.

It doesn’t matter what region you live in or whether it’s an overused word or not, it’s still not something to say, said the Kit Carson student whose mother wonders if the teacher has ever used word.

Not everything that can come out of the tongue so easily is a first time, Kit Carson’s parent said.

The Sacramento City Unified School District has sent an email to the Kit Carson community. They provide guidance and support to students as they investigate, adding: This incident is deeply disturbing, especially because it happened in a classroom that was supposed to be a safe haven for our students to learn and grow .

When you have a teacher saying that stuff, it’s not inclusive, said Angel White, who is a Kit Carson senior in the student government. You feel so comfortable in this space, you are not a good teacher.

We asked a parent in Kit Carson how he expects the district to respond.

Of course, in the event of a pandemic, I would hate to see someone lose their job, but I think serious education and counseling needs to be given to this particular teacher.

We asked a parent of Kit Carson what she wanted her daughter to know about the words used in her class.

Anyone who uses the word towards her or in front of her doesn’t really care about her or her feelings, the parent said.

The email sent to the Kit Carson community says the district is investigating and providing guidance to students. CBS13 asked if the teacher was still employed. The district told us they did not comment on personnel matters.
