Media headlines June 30
CNN and MSNBC ratings plummet, Ilhan Omar told CNN she has no regrets equating the United States and Israel with the Taliban, and an MSNBC legal analyst praising Attorney General Garland for personally picking up ice cream for DOJ employees complete today’s media headlines
VPM, an NPR Virginia affiliate, withdrew a PolitiFact fact check that hit Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe for his “misleading” attack publicity against GOP rival Glenn Youngkin.
VPM released a fact-check written by PolitiFact Virginia editor-in-chief Warren Fiske, who reviewed a McAuliffe ad that echoed Youngkin’s comments at a 2017 roundtable attended by the former governor.
The ad features the remarks as if Youngkin is a “big fan” of McAuliffe’s leadership with comments such as “Here we have one in fifty states that are doing very well, and especially in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” ” If you want to put up a new factory, this is the place to put it “and” Governor, I’m going to go back to the role you played in the development of Virginia’s economy. How do you do it? “

Fiske explained in his report that the announcement’s remarks were presented “without context”, noting that his first comment “summarized the remarks made by his four-member panel.” The second quote had “critical words” cut out while the third only plugged in Youngkin’s home state.
“In evaluating Youngkins’ comments, it is also important to consider his role as moderator and that of McAuliffes as a panelist. Moderators are generally neutral and polite to the panelists. If Youngkin had problems with McAuliffes’ economic policies in 2017, this seminar may not be a suitable venue. to disseminate them, “Fiske wrote.” So, contrary to McAuliffes ‘assertion, Youngkins’ 2017 comments do not prove that he was a big fan of the economic policies of former governors, or that his current criticism of the McAuliffes’ stewardship is an about-face. “
The report, which was titled “McAuliffe Misleading Claims Youngkin Congratulated Him,” was withdrawn Tuesday by VPM.
“We have removed a political article on a McAuliffe campaign ad due to a material omission in our reports. We apologize for our error and will post a notice of withdrawal on the VPM site,” VPM explained on Twitter.
On Wednesday, VPM republished the Politifact Virginia report with the new headline, “The Story Behind McAuliffe Ad Praising Youngkin’s Praise,” which notably removed the ad’s “misleading” descriptor.
The report also included a “correction”.
“When PolitiFact Virginia originally released this report on June 29, we did not include Youngkin’s comments outside of a US Export-Import Bank conference that dealt with similar topics, because in our reporting process, we failed to contact the McAuliffe campaign, “said the correction. “This goes against our reporting standards, which require us to contact the political campaigns we write about. We have corrected this omission in this report and we apologize for the error.”

Oddly, however, the updated report included comments made by Youngkin in 2019 and 2020 that praised Virginia’s economy allegedly provided to VPM by the McAuliffe campaign that have nothing to do with it. ad in question.
Leaving aside the EXIM Symposium, however, Youngkin made some positive comments about aspects of Virginia’s economy that did not appear in the ad. The McAuliffes campaign sent them to us and said they showed that the gist of the announcement was correct, “Fiske explained.
In his revised conclusion, Fiske wrote: “The bottom line: Contrary to McAuliffes ‘publicity claim, Youngkins’ words in 2017 do not prove that he was a ‘big fan’ of the economic policies of former governors. But his words from 2019 suggest that good things have happened in Virginia over the past eight years – although he hasn’t credited McAuliffe or Northam. “

Matt Wolking, the communications director of the Youngkin campaign, brushed off the so-called “retracted” fact check that still concluded that the McAuliffe ad “modifies and modifies” Youngkin’s remarks.
“[Twenty-four] hours later, PolitiFact still concludes that Terry McAuliffe’s campaign edited a video deceptively to mislead voters, “Wolking tweeted.
Neither VPM nor Fiske responded to Fox News requests for comment.
