England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has said his Euro 2020 exploits were fueled by the criticism he suffered during a difficult season with Everton.
Pickford has heard calls for Gareth Southgate to remove him from the England squad after making a series of costly mistakes during the nationwide campaign.
The 27-year-old was knocked out by Carlo Ancelotti, then Everton boss, for a Premier League game at Newcastle in November.
But Southgate kept his confidence in Pickford and was rewarded with a superb performance in England’s race to the European Championship quarter-finals against Ukraine in Rome on Saturday.
Pickford is yet to concede a goal in four games and made two crucial saves in Tuesday’s historic 2-0 win over Germany in the round of 16.
“You are always critical when you are a professional footballer and an English player,” Pickford said on Thursday.
“It’s about maturing every day and becoming the best you can be.
“Having a son really helps. It changes your life. I feel like I’ve changed. I’m 27 so I’ve played a lot more games.”
Pickford’s impressive form has harmonized with an English defense which has been combative and well-trained in the tournament so far.
Quick to praise the contributions of those who came before him, Pickford said: “For me that’s great and it’s really cool. But it’s not just me, it’s a full XI and all. the world works very hard to keep them clean, in football tournaments they are essential.
“For me it was a good game, I was in the moment and I have to be in the moment for England. I felt like I was there, making saves when I got there.
“You just have to be prepared, the focus levels have to be high and I just have to be 100% throughout the game.”
England were roared by an ecstatic Wembley crowd of over 40,000 as they beat Germany in the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time in 55 years.
Pickford revealed that the boisterous atmosphere gave the team more momentum to win the quarter-final in Rome and return home to Wembley for the semi-final against Denmark or the Czech Republic.
With the final also at Wembley, Pickford said: “The fans were great the other night and throughout the group stages, so I think that gives us extra motivation for the game, to get back to a half. final with 60,000 fans. “
