Major League Baseball and the Los Angeles Dodgers are aware of a report from TMZ Sports that Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer is under investigation by the Pasadena, Calif., Police Department after a wife accused him of assault.
The MLB is “reviewing” the report, according to Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post, and the Dodgers on Tuesday issued a statement relying on the league.
“The Dodgers were made aware of the allegations against Trevor Bauer late in the afternoon and have immediately contacted Major League Baseball, which will be handling the matter,” the Dodgers said in their statement Tuesday night. “The Dodgers take any allegation of this nature very seriously, but will have no further comment at this time.”
Marc Garelick, the woman’s lawyer, told TMZ that her client “sought and obtained a court protection order against Mr. Trevor Bauer, under the Domestic Violence Prevention Act” after ” suffered severe physical and emotional pain “as a result of a” recent assault. “
The Athletic’s Brittany Ghiroli and Katie Strang reported on the details of the woman’s encounters with Bauer, which she said were initially consensual, on Wednesday. “I agreed to have consensual sex, but I did not accept or consent to what he did next. I did not agree to be sexually assaulted,” the woman said. The Athletic’s report, which includes graphic details of the restraining order, including allegations that Bauer strangled and hit the woman, can be found here.
Bauer’s agent Jon Fetterolf released a statement to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, saying the relationship was “completely consensual.” Here is part of Fetterolf’s statement:
“Mr. Bauer had a brief and completely consensual sexual relationship initiated by [the woman] from April 2021. […] In the days following their second and last meeting, [the woman] shared photos of herself and said she had seen a doctor for a concussion. Mr. Bauer responded with concern and confusion, and [the woman] was neither angry nor accusatory.
M. Bauer and [the woman] have not corresponded for over a month and have not seen each other for over six weeks. […] Any claim that the couple’s dating was not 100% consensual is baseless, defamatory and will be refuted to the fullest extent of the law. “
MLB has yet to release a statement. The league’s collectively negotiated domestic violence policy allows MLB to discipline Bauer even though no criminal charges are laid. Other players have been placed on administrative leave while the legal process unfolds.
Bauer won the NL Cy Young Award last season with the Cincinnati Reds. During the offseason, the right-hander signed a three-year, $ 102 million contract with the Dodgers in February.
