Dodgers’ Trevor Bauer put on administrative leave by MLB over assault allegations

Major League Baseball placed Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Trevor Bauer on seven-day administrative leave on Friday, just days after it became known he was under investigation by the Police Department. of Pasadena, California, for assault. The league announced the decision in a statement Friday afternoon:

The MLB investigation into the allegations against Trevor Bauer is ongoing. Although no decision has been taken in this matter, we have made the decision to place Mr. Bauer on administrative leave for seven days from now. The MLB continues to collect information as part of our ongoing investigation in conjunction with the Pasadena Police Department’s active criminal investigation. We will comment further in due course.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Thursday that Bauer would make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the Washington Nationals. “I am able to follow the lead of Major League Baseball,” said Roberts. “Their recommendation was that we – this was our scheduled start for Sunday – and that we go ahead and have this game start on Sunday. And so for me to try and read it more outside of just following. what they advised me and we have to do it, I’m just choosing to kind of follow their lead. “

The allegations against Bauer are serious. The woman’s attorney, Marc Garelick, told TMZ Sports he obtained a Bauer protection order for her under the state’s Domestic Violence Prevention Act. Garelick said the woman “was in severe physical and emotional pain” as a result of a “recent assault.”

Athletic’s Katie Strang and Brittany Ghiroli reported the details of the ban order on Wednesday. “I agreed to have consensual sex, but I did not accept or consent to what he did next. I did not agree to be sexually assaulted,” the woman said.

The Athletic’s report, which includes graphic details of the restraining order, including allegations that Bauer strangled and hit the woman, can be found here.

Bauer’s agent Jon Fetterolf made a statement to Passan, saying the relationship was “completely consensual”. Here is part of Fetterolf’s statement:

“Mr. Bauer had a brief and completely consensual sexual relationship initiated by [the woman] from April 2021. […] In the days following their second and last meeting, [the woman] shared photos of herself and said she had seen a doctor for a concussion. Mr. Bauer responded with concern and confusion, and [the woman] was neither angry nor accusatory.

M. Bauer and [the woman] have not corresponded for over a month and have not seen each other for over six weeks. […] Any claim that the couple’s dating was not 100% consensual is baseless, defamatory and will be refuted to the fullest extent of the law. “

Under the league’s collectively negotiated domestic violence policy, the MLB is allowed to discipline Bauer even though no criminal charges are brought against him. Placing a player on administrative leave while legal proceedings unfold is a standard response.

Bauer, 30, won the National League’s Cy Young Award last season as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. He signed a three-year contract with the Dodgers in February worth $ 102 million.
