Xavi has opened up about Real Madrid’s influence on La Roja in comments made by Diario AS. Xavi, a key part of the Spanish squad that won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, as well as the all-conquering Barcelona side, is currently coaching in Qatar but has returned to Spain during the summer holidays.
Spain are currently participating in Euro 2020 under the leadership of Luis Enrique, a coach with whom Xavi won the Champions League in 2015. They have been the subject of serious criticism; they opened their campaign with draws against Sweden and Poland before bursting the cava and convincingly beating Slovakia and Croatia. For Xavi, La Roja and criticism go hand in hand.
Criticism is normal, he says. The environment in Spain is very critical, demanding. Too bad. The press does not team up. This is why it is more complicated for Spain to win titles. We did it with our generation, but it’s complicated.
It is even more difficult for a coach who does not have Madrid players, in the Madrid environment that is the national team. At the end of the day, you have to accept the criticism, avoid it and focus on your game. They are doing very well and are already in the quarterfinals.
Luis Enrique did not select a Madrid player for his team, a decision that caused a sensation in the Spanish press. Sergio Ramos, the alpha-alpha of this Spanish team, was especially noticed by his absence. Luis Enrique, being the intransigent Asturian that he is, will not however allow himself to be influenced by the tribunal of public opinion. Hell proceeds as it sees fit.
