Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, will be released soon for its thirteenth season. As the popular game show turned 21 on Saturday, producer Siddhartha Basu responded to criticism for selling sob stories.

On July 3, 2000, Kaun Banega Crorepati premiered on television, marking Amitabh Bachchans’ small screen debut. The show, in which contestants answer a series of increasingly difficult questions to win a 7 crore prize, continues to be immensely popular with audiences.

In an interview with The Indian Express, KBC producer Siddharth Basu was asked about the criticism the show receives for selling sob stories. He argued that none of the emotions were designed for notes.

KBC has never been just another quiz. Human history has always mattered, and this is what created the sensation of the first season in India, on the basis of which Vikas wrote his book Q&A. There have never been anything but tears on KBC. If people get emotional, it’s not designed. It’s natural on a life-changing show in front of a massive audience and a larger-than-life host, he said.

There is a wide range of people from all over India on KBC telling compelling and relevant stories about ordinary Indians. It’s a show that touches lives with the heart as well as the mind, he added.

Like last year, the whole audition process is also taking place online for KBC 13, instead of going to different cities. With KBC 12, policymakers have introduced a series of changes, keeping the Covid-19 pandemic in mind. Some of the changes included removing the lifeline from the audience poll, as the show was shot without a live audience and fewer contestants in the first round of the fastest finger.
