Salmon Arm restaurateur defends staff after negative reviews shared online – Kelowna Capital News

While Michael Vu can take the heat, he’s unwilling to let his employees get blasted.

On the morning of Thursday, June 30, the chef and owner of Hanoi 36 knew it was going to be a busy day. With another scorcher (40C) in the forecast, the Salmon Arm restaurateur posted a polite request on the Hanoi 36 Facebook page, that customers be patient with the staff, “because it is a very hot day and they do their best! “

Not everyone got the message.

Indeed, like the day before, the heat once again brought out the guests in droves. Within two and a half hours, Vu and his team served approximately 100 clients.

“For the two hottest days of the year, we were absolutely full,” Vu said. “We had queues outside the door, the phone was ringing all the time.”

Vu said that at one point, the restaurant’s online ordering system was disabled to focus on in-house diners.

During the rush of June 30, a group of seven showed up, without reservations, for dinner. Vu said they were seated and it was explained, in advance, that with large groups an automatic tip is added to the bill.

After their meals, Vu said the group members took issue with paying the tip because they were not happy with their service.

“They said the food was great but the service was terrible,” Vu said.

Later that evening, Vu learned that someone from the group had shared his criticism in a negative review on the internet.

Even though he admitted mistakes had been made, Vu couldn’t let his young waiters, both in their first jobs, endure the heat. That night he took to the Facebook page again, this time to defend his staff.

Vu said he and his wife were planning to have a staff meeting after the shift to discuss what had happened with the large group. But when he looked at the exasperated and hungry faces of his servers, he thought about it better and posted the post to Facebook instead.

“I said, ‘Guys, come over here. Before I publish this post, I am going to read it to you, because I want you to know that no matter what mistakes I make, I am very proud of you and you should be proud of yourself, ”Vu said.

“I chose this path because it is more important to give confidence to young people, to workers, so that they can continue to try. And they know mistakes have been made… But there should be someone to tell them it’s okay.

Hundreds of people have since responded to Vu’s passionate post, sharing their love and support.

Vu stressed that it was not about self-promotion, but about doing the right thing.

“As a businessman, I understand that we have a reputation to uphold,” Vu said. “If we apologize for something that was wrong, then things like this would manifest, and you would always make someone feel that no matter what they do, they are always right.” It is not my job to correct them, but it is my job to defend the workers.
