Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Trevor Bauer is on a temporary restraining order after a woman accused him of sexual assault, and he was recently put on administrative leave by MLB for that the league begin an investigation. The allegations are also being investigated by the Pasadena, California Police Department.
One of Bauer’s agents, Jon Fetterolf, recently released a statement to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, in which he claimed that the relationship between Bauer and the accuser was “completely consensual” and that “any allegation that the encounters of the couple were not 100% consensual are unfounded, defamatory, and will be rebutted to the fullest extent of the law. “
Given the alarming nature of the accusations and the importance of Bauer – he won the NL Cy Young award last season and signed a free agent contract with the Dodgers in the past offseason that will earn him 40 million dollars for this season – reactions to the news have been abundant.
Among these is that of Dave Stewart, a former All-Star pitcher who began his 16-year MLB career with the Dodgers. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently asked Stewart what he thought about Bauer’s allegations. In part, Stewart criticized the Dodgers for failing to take action before the MLB announced the administrative leave decision:
The organization is not what it was when we arrived. The Dodgers organization I grew up in under the O’Malley family would never put up with that. The Dodgers should have intervened in this situation, and they did not. You have to have character standards.
…
The Dodgers let the MLB apply the leave, but in my opinion you don’t have to wait for the MLB to tell you what to do. Why are you getting your hands on a woman this way? He’s trying to say it was consensual, but what kind of person would do that?
More from Stewart:
I know they owe him a lot of money, but the good thing is to distance himself from this guy. I don’t want him in my clubhouse. If you are a teammate, you cannot support him. And if you’re a supporting teammate, what do you stand for?
Without his contract, he would have left. But even with the money they owe him, you can’t let him play for you and act like nothing has happened. You can not.
Nightengale’s discussion with Stewart includes more, including the former pitcher’s thoughts on the current direction of the Dodgers and the response he said he received when he informed the team he would not attend. a July 25 reunion of the 1981 World Series winning team, of which he was a member.
As for Bauer, Brittany Ghiroli and Katie Strang of The Athletic have reported details of the woman’s encounters with him, which she said were initially consensual. “I agreed to have consensual sex, but I did not accept or consent to what he did next. I did not agree to be sexually assaulted,” the woman said. The Athletic’s report, which includes graphic details of the restraining order, including allegations that Bauer strangled and hit the woman, can be found here.
A full restraining order hearing is scheduled for July 23 in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
