Dfinity founder Dominic Williams shared tentative plans for an Internet Computer fork called Badlands. However, some members of the community opposed the plans.
Dfinity faces more criticism
Three months after Dfinity’s internet computer went live, project founder Dominic Williams proposed a blockchain fork.
In a blog post, Williams conceptualized a new blockchain called Badlands. The post explained how Badlands would act as a sister network to Internet Computer, a highly scalable blockchain network founded by Williams.
Williams said the team will create the Internet computer and issue a new Badlands token, BDL. The token would be airborne to holders of ICP, the native Internet Computer token, and some would be sold in a public auction, with the proceeds being used for research and development, Williams said.
While some in the community have expressed excitement over the news, others have criticized the proposal and questioned the motive behind issuing a new separate blockchain and token.
This is very similar to Kusama-Polkadot. $ KSM $ POINT
It doesn’t look very original and also takes away from $ ICP IMO. Why not just keep it as a subnet?
Also I thought that ICP NNS was to prevent forks? It’s basically a fork of ICP for experimentation.

Among the critics, Jordan Last, a well-known developer working on Internet Computer, said Badlands should be deployed as a subnet rather than launched as a separate channel. A subnet is an application-specific blockchain network within the Internet computer.
While the decision is currently undecided, Williams said he would prefer to launch a new token through a network fork instead of a subnet.
Please, please do this as a new type of subnet if you are going to do so.
I have several concerns with the concept of Badlands, but most of them stem from the introduction of a whole new network and token.
Ignore all of this and create new types of subnets. https://t.co/8tTninbXEM

The ICH debacle
Other critics say a new token could exacerbate the previous ICP token distribution debacle that took place after the mainnet launched in May.
An Arkham Intelligence report alleged that the Dfinity team led investors through their distribution of ICP tokens. Arkham found that the team would have imposed vesting schedules on early stage investors and airdrop holders, while company insiders were able to liquidate unvested allocations of the token.
David, we should talk a little bit because somehow you get the wrong impression of this project and its goals.
The goal of Badlands is to bring amateur node providers into the internet computing ecosystem, which people have been asking for for a long time.

This schedule would have helped ICP’s prices drop from $ 730 to around $ 38, the equivalent of a 95% draw. The crash wiped out over $ 300 billion in less than a month, making it one of the fastest in crypto history.
Rather than clear up Arkham’s accusation, Dfinity has chosen to remain silent on the matter. However, Williams responded to a Dfinity fan’s question about the report, claiming it was “sponsored by a competitor.”
Williams says the Badlands network will be open to anyone to run nodes using low-cost device setups like the Raspberry Pi. This would overcome the need to purchase expensive hardware currently needed to run a node for the Internet. Computer.
