The recent statement by Reverend Anthony Spearman of the NC NAACP regarding Senate Bill 473 introduced by State Senator Lisa Barnes was as needlessly caustic as it was unbalanced.
For those who thought the nasty accusations against State Auditor Beth Wood regarding her City of Rocky Mount audit couldn’t be more nasty, Reverend Spearman proves them wrong, taking the SB 473 discussion even further. The NAACPs statement plays the race card as hard as it can be played.
If it’s not already obvious, the NAACP reveals that it has no credible or substantial criticism of SB 473. Instead, the NAACP hopes its ad hominem attacks on Senator Barnes and the State Auditor Wood will divert attention from bills calling for accountability and transparency in local government. .
The Nash County Republican Party is calling on Reverend Spearman and the NAACP to apologize to Republican Senator Barnes for his baseless accusations.
We hope that the president of the Democratic Party of the NC, Bobbie Richardson, and the representative of the State James Gailliard will defend their Democratic colleague in the same way. Remaining silent in the face of such accusations will call into question whether they also believe Wood wants to suppress elected officials, businesses and black voters, in which case they should call for his immediate resignation.
Chairman, Nash County Republican Party
