HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (AP) – Former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, speaking at an Independence Day program at an Alabama church, said critics should not “demoralize” the country even if America did not immediately achieve its ideal of equality.

“I believe we must teach our young people the unique history of America, and I cannot allow the left to demoralize the founding of the greatest country in the history of the world,” Sessions said Sunday.

Sessions said the country was founded on high ideals that all human beings are created equal.

“The fact that all these ideals were not realized immediately does not in any way demoralize the foundation of our country,” he said.

The sessions took place during an Independence Day program at First Baptist Church in Huntsville. He sat on stage to answer questions from Pastor Travis Collins, such as questions about the role of faith in public service.

Sessions represented Alabama in the United States Senate for 20 years before becoming President Donald Trump’s first attorney general. Trump then asked Sessions to resign when their relationship deteriorated over his challenge to the Russia investigation. Sessions sought to reclaim the Senate seat last year, but lost the Republican nomination to former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville, who won the seat.

Sessions, as he has done in previous speeches, joked about his dismissal as Trump’s attorney general.

“A lot of people are fired, I just got fired more publicly than most people,” Sessions said.

The program was steeped in patriotism and faith, and the sessions largely avoided specific political discussions. Speaking to the Baptist congregation, he addressed what he called an “encroachment” on religion and discussed the Trump administration’s decision to intervene on behalf of a baker who refused to make a cake for a same-sex couple.

“You shouldn’t have to go to a ceremony that he thinks is wrong,” Sessions said.

Asked about the criticism he has faced, Sessions said this is part of the public service territory and has been throughout the history of the United States.

“I had this perverted view that I was just trying to do the right thing, stand up for it the best I could and not care,” Sessions said.
