JD Vance, author of the best-selling memoir Hillbilly Elegy and now a candidate for the Ohio Senate, admitted on Monday that he regrets his past criticism of former President Donald Trump.
In an interview with Fox News on Monday, Vance, who did not vote for Trump, acknowledged his disapproving old tweets from 2016, but confirmed he had changed his mind and believed Trump left a positive legacy.
“Like a lot of people, I criticized Trump in 2016,” the Ohio-based venture capitalist remarked. “And I ask people not to judge me based on what I said in 2016, because I was very open that I said these critical things and I regret them, and I regret for mistaking the guy. “
“I think he was a good president,” he added, “I think he made a lot of good decisions for people, and I think he took a lot of criticism.”
Vance called Trump harmful in 2016 and voted independent Evan McMullin his vote, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Vance said he had been convicted in previous years for supporting some of Trump’s political priorities, noting: “I think that’s the most important thing, it’s not what you said he five years ago, but if you’re willing to stand up and take the heat and take the punches for truly standing up for the interests of the American people. ”
Vance’s entry into the Ohio Republican primary race marks his debut in the political arena. He presented himself as an anti-elite outsider ready to confront the government establishment to prioritize American interests and serve the country’s forgotten voters often belittled by elected officials who represent them.
Speaking to Fox News on Thursday, Vance commented of the detached career politicians: “I think so far a lot of them are frustrated and a little angry with me because I’m actually saying what is true is that a lot of these people don’t care about their own constituents, they think they are either fanatics or they think they are stupid.
“We need a new policy for a new generation. The old way of doing things isn’t working, ”the candidate said at a campaign launch rally in his hometown of Middletown, Ohio.
You have leaders of this country, in government and in business, who don’t think they owe anything to the country that made them who they are, ”he continued.
