SUPERIOR, Wisconsin – It’s banned for this year’s Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival, and we’ve learned that the timing and closure of the Canadian border is partly to blame.
The popular festival on Barker’s Island in Superior was slated for late August, but committee members felt there was not enough time to assemble boat teams of 20 to fully fundraise for the charitable partner of Twin Ports Rotary Clubs, the 23rd veteran.
On top of that, six of the eight festival boats used in the races are stranded in Canada because the border is still closed.
I’ve heard rumors it might open later this month, but it was cutting it too close, so that was a big part of that. Also, we have a lot of teams from Thunder Bay and the surrounding area so we would hate to do it without them. It would be difficult, said Scott Soderberg of the festival planning committee.
The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival has raised over $ 1 million for charities in Twin Ports since its inception in 2002.
The committee will now focus on a return for 2022. They are also looking for a new major sponsor.
