Council responds to criticism from all white magazines

UN COUNCIL said it is striving to be “fully inclusive” after a magazine it publishes was criticized for not containing ethnic minorities.

Colin Harvey, a resident of Redcar and Cleveland, said he was hit after reading the latest issue of “This Is Redcar & Cleveland” because he could not find a photo showing a person belonging to a minority ethnic.

Mr Harvey said: “There are over 200 photographs of different people on its pages and not a single photo is of a BAME (Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority) person, all are white.

“Nowadays that is not acceptable. ”

The council, which publishes the magazine three times a year for residents living in the borough, said it has published articles and photographs in recent editions featuring communities and people belonging to ethnic minorities.

Government figures show Redcar and Cleveland to be one of the least ethnically diverse regions in England and Wales.

In the last census, 98.5% of the population was recorded as “white”, which ranks it 173rd among the least diversified regions of all local communities.

Only the Isles of Scilly are less diverse with 98.8% of its inhabitants declaring themselves white.

A council spokesperson said: “The council is proud to be a fully inclusive local authority for all people of all backgrounds and our residents’ magazine aims to reflect all of these people in our communities.

“The current edition of our council magazine is only the latest, and in recent editions it contains a number of articles and photographs featuring BAME communities and people, as well as a range of people from diverse backgrounds.

“We will continue to highlight the brilliant work and accomplishments of people from all communities in our borough in future editions and through our broader social networks. ”
