Cuomo’s critics slam emergency gun violence as executive takeover

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced he was declaring a disaster emergency for gun violence treating it like a public health crisis, but critics on both sides of the aisle are skeptical of the strategy and the governor’s real motives.

Cuomo likened his approach to how his administration approached the coronavirus pandemic, something he claimed great success for while being heavily criticized for his handling of nursing home patients, many of whom have died. Much like with COVID-19, Cuomo is taking action through an executive order.

“Just like we did with COVID, New York will once again lead the country with a comprehensive approach to tackling and preventing gun violence, and our first step is to recognize the problem with a first-time disaster. emergency in the country on firearms. violence, ”he said.

Cuomo has recognized that gun violence is not confined to his own state, but he has positioned himself as a leader of a movement to combat it through a new executive order.

“Now it’s a national problem. I understand. But someone has to step in and someone has to fix it,” Cuomo said.

New York State Democratic Assembly Member Ron Kim, a known political rival to Cuomo who clashed with him over deaths in nursing homes, warned that Cuomo’s order was really a empowerment and a way to stay in the spotlight.

“For Cuomo, it’s not about fixing gun violence. It’s about maintaining his executive powers during a state of emergency so that he can continue to play the role of savior on television while watching without surveillance. stop polling, ”Kim tweeted.

Kim then tweeted again, responding to Cuomo comparing his approach to gun violence to that of the pandemic. He accused the governor of using this as a profit opportunity without solving any problems.

“Translation: I want to use gun violence to play the hero again on my brothers’ show CNN and earn an additional $ 5.1 million on a book deal without doing anything to end the cycle of violence,” Kim said.

Others have focused on the failures of Cuomo’s administration during the pandemic, as the state has suffered one of the largest casualties in the country, with a significant percentage of them from patients in homes of Nurses died after Cuomo ordered facilities to accept residents from hospitals who tested positive for COVID-19. The administration faced further criticism for keeping the figures secret.

“Said without irony: @NYGovCuomo wants to do with gun violence what he did with Covid,” tweeted Lindsey Boylan, a former Cuomo employee who was the first in a series of many women to accuse him of sexual harassment or misconduct.

Representative Claudia Tenney, RN.Y., outlined what she believes to be the real disaster emergency.

“I know about 15,000 families who would consider its deadly COVID nursing home policy a ‘disaster emergency’,” she tweeted.

Fox News contacted Cuomo’s office for a response to the criticisms, but they did not immediately respond.

Marc Molinaro, a Republican who challenged Cuomo in 2018, pointed to the governor’s criminal justice policies, which include the elimination of cash bail for many offenses.

“Andrew Cuomo and the Democrats of Albany have spent the past 4 years dismantling our criminal justice system, compromising public safety and even threatening the well-being of alleged attackers,” Molinaro said in a statement. “It is absurd and dishonest now to blame the increased violence on anyone other than themselves.”

Likewise, former NYPD commissioner Bernard Kerik blamed the leadership for the increase in crime that has hit New York City, especially New York City, over the past year.

“The governor, prosecutors and mayor are responsible for the increase in violent crime, shootings and murders,” Kerik tweeted, calling the decree “nothing more than an attempted back door attack on our second amendment “.
