Republican lawmaker Rep. Mo Brooks appeared to blame former President Donald Trump for appearing at the rally of Trump supporters on Capitol Hill on Jan.6, with his lawyers insisting he only appeared because the White House had asked him to.

Brooks is defending himself in a civil case brought by Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell, who alleges that Brooks, among others, instigated the Jan. 6 insurgency by delivering a speech in which he said: “Today is the day the American patriots are starting to notice ass-kicking. “

However, in a new civilian file reported by NBC4 reporter Scott MacFarlane, lawyers for Brooks claimed he only gave the speech because a member of the Trump administration asked him to do so.

“On January 5, 2021, Brooks was at the Brooks Congressional Office in the Rayburn House Office when a White House employee contacted Brooks during regular business hours and asked Brooks to speak at the rally. Ellipse Jan. 6, 2021, ”the civil case filing said.

Brooks only gave an Ellipse speech because the White House asked him, in his capacity as a US congressman, to speak at the Ellipse Rally. Without the White House’s request, Brooks would not have appeared at the Ellipse Rally. “

Brooks condemned the insurgency on Capitol Hill and denied that his behavior was involved in the violent scenes, which resulted in the deaths of five people. Trump endorsed him for the GOP nomination in the race to replace Alabama Senator Richard Selby next year.

The case represents Brooks’ defense in a case he has reportedly sought to avoid for months. An attorney for Representative Swalwell, who is also suing Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Rudy Giuliani for incitement to insurgency, said in May they had used a private investigator to locate Brooks in order to serve him the prosecution.

Brooks insisted he hadn’t avoided Swalwell. He was eventually served with the trial after a bailiff handed him over to his wife at their home.

Brooks said last week that he represented the “will” of his constituents when he delivered his speech on January 6.
