Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger have joined the chorus of criticism over the decision which saw England beat Denmark in overtime on Wednesday night.
Raheem Sterling was found guilty of a foul in the box, but Mourinho said it was “never a penalty”.
Harry Kane saw his resulting penalty saved by Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, only to get in the rebound to give England a 2-1 lead that ultimately proved enough to send them to the Euro 2020 final.
The result was just a reward for a great performance from Gareth Southgate’s side. But Mourinho says the decision itself was very sweet.
“England have been fantastic but for me it was never a penalty,” the former Spurs manager told TalkSport.
“At this level, the semi-final of the Euro, I do not understand the decision of the referee and even less why the Var did not bring the referee to the screen.
“I am very happy that England won. As a footballer, I am disappointed that a penalty has been awarded.

And Mourinho’s ex-Premier League rival Arsene Wenger strongly agrees that officials made the wrong decision.
“At a time like this, I don’t understand why they don’t ask the referee to take a look at this and have a clear view,” he said.
“It’s important that the referee is absolutely convinced that it was a penalty and I don’t understand why Var didn’t ask him to watch it.”
The video assistant referee reviewed the decision, but felt it was not a serious enough error for the on-court referee to reassess the penalty appeal.
Peter Schmeichel, the father of defeated Danish goalkeeper Kasper, has also revealed that he has been inundated with angry comments about the decision from fellow Danes.
“Everyone says it’s not a penalty,” said Schmeichel. “This will be the subject of a very long debate.
“It’s hard to take. It is not a penalty. I would have been much more relaxed and accepted if they had marked one of the many opportunities they created for themselves.
“Unfortunately the referee made a big mistake. Either way, we are very proud of the Danish team – we are leaving the tournament with honor.
England face Italy in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday evening, with the kick-off at 8 p.m. at Wembley Stadium.
Kane is just one goal away from the tournament’s top scorers, having won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup.
Italy beat Spain on penalties to reach Sunday’s flagship final, with Roberto Mancini’s side considered by many to be the most impressive team in the tournament so far.
This visit to the final is England’s first in a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup.
