Pinjara Khubsurti Ka’s Riya Sharma is beloved for her role as Mayura in the TV series. However, things weren’t always this good on the show. The actress had to face a lot of hate, negative reviews when she joined the series. The impact of these harsh comments was such that Riya started having panic and anxiety attacks, but the actress managed to turn the tide and is now appreciated for the role. Riya joined ETimes TV this week for our special segment, Tellyblazer, in which she spoke about her tough journey in the industry, handling negative reviews and getting out of it. She also opened up about how she was taunted for joining the entertainment industry. She also spoke about the role she wants to play in the future and the pressure to be active on social media. Work experience at Pinjara Khubsurti Ka Working at Pinjara has been the best experience. Whether it was the cast, the story, the vibe on set, everything was different and I’ve never experienced anything like this before. I don’t know why this character, the setting, the people on the show are so close to my heart. This show will always hold a special place in my heart, especially the character Mayura. People gave Sahil a new name, my co-star and I a new name Mayukar and they gave us so much love. I feel special and sometimes I wonder if it’s real, is it happening for real, it’s been amazing. Faced with criticism for playing a pretty girl
Obviously, not everything was love in the journey of playing Mayura. It was a really tough journey for me initially as I joined the show during the pandemic last year and the character was such that she is a very pretty girl so there was a lot of criticism. I appreciated the review and took it positively. But there were few things that affected me mentally and during that time my co-actor was very supportive of me. My co-stars Sahil, my grandfather, Anandita ji have all supported me.
What kind of criticism did you have to face at the beginning?
At first I had become a little self-aware because the character briefing I got was that the girl Mayura was very beautiful and I felt that she was not me and that I am not this girl. I became very aware and stopped loving myself because of it and then I went on social media and read the comments on my promo. I don’t know why I did it but once I read these comments and there were people saying who you picked the casting is wrong they would say the show says it is the most beautiful girl but she is not. You could have chosen someone else and they took the names of other popular actresses. I lost all confidence in myself and everything after reading them. I came here on the set and I would just be with myself and I wouldn’t talk to anyone. I had become very negative. I would come home after packing my bags and cry that it’s not me and I don’t want to do this, it’s not for me. But my creative team would tell me to relax and say they made the right decision and made it after a lot of thought and it’s the right decision. Because of all of this I wasn’t able to get into my character well and I would say a few lines like my character would praise her beauty and I would find it absurd that how can I praise myself. I would feel like I’m not that pretty. So I was in a very negative state and my co-stars helped me a lot. They would come to me and ask me to join them for lunch and now we share a great bond.
So, did you get nervous about losing the show because of all of this and at the same time a lot of shows were cut off. And were these comments very demotivating?
The comments broke my heart and I was broken and used to have panic attacks and suffer from anxiety. I was alone here in Mumbai as I do not live with my parents, I am from Nagpur. I was hiding these things from them because I didn’t want them to worry or get angry about me. I found myself very lonely here and there were these negative comments. But things changed and I started to get good feedback and thanks to these positive people, my fans who loved me, I became kind of a balanced person. These positive comments would distract my attention from the negative things. But trust me, it wasn’t easy and at one point I felt like I just couldn’t do it, I just didn’t want to do it. Our producer believed in me.
The first five episodes that my producers had shot with another girl and it was a big thing that they trusted me for the role. They replaced this actress with me. I couldn’t disappoint them, I had a responsibility on my shoulders, I had to prove it to all these people and the public that I could do it. So at first I was very distracted and just couldn’t play the character well. But then things changed and I got comfortable. Then positive comments started coming in and a few months ago there were reports that the creators were planning to replace me and there were positive comments all over social media that fans love this Mayura and that they would stop watching the show if I was replaced. So the table had turned.
Were you afraid of being replaced at first because of the negative comments?
No, I wasn’t that scared. I knew I was filming for them and they brought me over from Nagpur especially for this show. I had this idea in my head but I knew if this show didn’t work I could go back to my hometown. But I was logged on to this show and I won’t deny that if I had been replaced I would have felt bad because I had been through a lot after bagging the show like I told you earlier. I asked my creators about this once and they told me it wasn’t even possible.
But are you affected by rumors that your show will no longer air or if you are being replaced?
At first I was affected, like when there were rumors about our show coming out in December of last year, I was actually nervous and getting anxious. In fact, I had developed such a close bond with my family on screen that I was getting nervous. I couldn’t imagine myself not going on sets and meeting them or not filming for the show. I was so used to being with them.
How is your relationship with Sahil going in real life?
It’s amazing, he’s such a good human being and has helped me a lot. We have a great friendship. I think Sahil is going to be my friend for life. She is a very good person. We understand each other well and we are also very professional.
Aside from the negative comments, what were some other challenges you had to face in playing the character or joining the industry?
I have no one else in my family in this industry. My parents, especially my mother, therefore had to face many problems. She is a lecturer. There are people who see this industry in a very bad light, they have bad things in mind. So when I started doing shows and bagged that show, my mom must have heard a lot. They were asking my mom about what she was doing in this industry, it’s a bad industry, people are bad, they do a lot of bad things and manipulate girls, so my mom must have heard all these things. My relatives told my mother a lot of things. Even I would hear people say that I definitely would have done bad things to get into the industry. I would tell you frankly, they would say I had to sleep with someone and that’s what I get from shows and projects. They would say she had to go through the casting couch. So I have to hear it all. People think the life of an actor is very easy, but no, it’s not very easy. I have faced a lot of things in fact I still face them and I know that I will face them in the future. But I’m preparing for it now. How has the industry opened up to you, how welcoming to you? Industry I would say I have only met good people so far. My first show was with Shekhar Suman and he’s so adorable. I am still friends with him and now I am friends with his son now. I don’t socialize a lot, I don’t go out a lot. The only friend I have in the industry is Shekhar Suman and his family. I’m only going to meet them at their place and party with them. I hear a lot from him, motivating stories, bad experiences. Fortunately, I have not encountered any unpleasant experiences.
