Following a series of Pokmon GO events, players blame Niantic for emptying their Pokballs to encourage them to buy them for GO Fest.
With Pokmon GO Fest coming in just over a week, many players are feeling exhausted by the Pokballs from Tuesday’s Spotlight Hour event. This year’s Pokmon GO Fest will feature a wide assortment of Pokémon to catch, from Legendaries to New Shiny ones.
This month, several Pokémon are given their own spotlight hours during which players will be able to encounter this Pokémon for an hour and have the chance to encounter shiny versions of these Pokémon. Bulbasaur’s spotlight hour recently passed on July 6, and other Kanto starters will also be getting their own spotlight hours this month. The Charmander and Squirtle Pokmon GO events will take place on July 13 and 20 respectively, and the month will end with a spotlight hour for Natu also on July 27.

Many players like Reddit user xclusivestyleszare are complaining that this year’s celebration event is a way to drain players’ Pokballs. For example, xclusivestylesz complains that they spent five minutes and 15 balls just to catch a Treeko, wondering if the high number of balls needed is intentional to encourage buying more for GO Fest. A comment also mentioned the game’s spotlight hours and how, despite having a research task rewarding 80 Pokballs, they browsed 200 Pokballs during the event. Getting Pokballs is also not helped by the lack of Pokstops in some players’ areas.
These reviews are a symptom of the biggest problem fans have noticed with Pokmon GO. Over the past few years, fans have expressed more and more complaints that they feel that the game pays more and more to win. These complaints stem from things like the rare Pokémon put behind eggs and the game encouraging the purchase of egg incubators. The debut of Mega Evolutions in the game last year was also canceled due to the cost of Mega Energy. Transferring Pokmon from Pokmon GO to Pokmon HOME also costs energy which restores over time or can be regenerated by paying real money. The list of mechanics paid to win is growing.
These events can provide plenty of opportunities to catch various Pokémon, but more and more players have felt disappointed with the events. on these events in order to avoid having to buy more Pokballs with real money. This Niantic model is unlikely to change anytime soon, but regardless, players will need to be prepared for Pokmon GO Fest on July 17th.
