Doubts emerge over the residence of Ty Humes, a San Dieguito school board hopeful, who he suggests the allegations are racism

Tyrone Ty Humes has a distinctive booming voice and, at 6ft 7in, can’t be missed. But a neighbor says the San Dieguito school board candidate was not seen living at the Torrey Hills guesthouse he claims to be his residence.

This neighbor has an unobstructed view of the backyard of 11279 Senda Luna Llena in the Carmel Valley area, the address Humes used in his election record.

I don’t believe he lives there, the neighbor said Thursday in a telephone interview. The person declined to be named for fear of being targeted by Humes or his allies.

The neighbor recalled conversations with one of the owners in April about whether they were renting their grandmother’s apartment. The answer was that it was not praised. The owners did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Their property is in Administrator Zone 5 of the San Dieguito Union School District, where the former appointed school board member, the district’s first black administrator, is running for election in early November.

If Humes lives on the property, says the neighbor, he must be very calm and very invisible.

Humes, 57, said by email Thursday that he was traveling to Los Angeles and returning home after work hours.

I have been living in Zone 5 since February 1, 2003, he said, adding that he was unaware that the only former black administrator and candidate had to announce his location and presence in a thunderous voice. Very sad about your racial expectations.

He declined to provide lease details and said he commuted to Los Angeles for 11 years.

But an SMS exchange obtained by The Times of San Diego indicates that Humes could live nearly 10 miles north in the Cardiff part of Encinitas Trustee Zone 3 of the affluent suburban school district.

On February 14, 2019, he texted an ex-wife:

My new address dated February 16, 2019 is as follows. I will maintain two residences. My legal address is as follows.

Ty Humes11279 Full Moon Trail San Diego, CA 92130

The address that I will use as a house for the children, which is a four bedroom with a large swimming pool and jacuzzi, is as follows

Ty Humes1440 Kings Cross DriveCardiff by the Sea, CA 92007

His second’s ex-wife, after one in Danbury, Connecticut asked: what is the purpose and need for legal or physical addresses?

Humes replied: My residence for voting and a board of directors.

Asked on Monday about the texts provided by two sources who did not want to be identified, Humes said of Senda Luna Llena’s house: It’s my residence, okay, and since we sold our family residence it two years ago. I’m renting out the entire second house they have in the back.

He said of the Cardiff address: It’s a place my kids go twice a month.

The Google Maps view of the Torrey Hills house shows a guesthouse, or grandma’s apartment, in the back yard.

Humes said he was a bit confused by the entities trying to set up every roadblock like I wasn’t allowed to run. So it gets out of hand.

He says Senda Luna’s address is on her ballot, driver’s license and passport.

He says his more recent ex-wife with whom he shares custody of two school-aged children has an ulterior motive.

Further, he said: Why am I just a threat to the existence of the teachers’ union? I won’t use the word faculty again. You knocked me over, and now you’re trying to stop me from running?

Her only Zone 5 rival so far is Julie Bronstein who also applied for the interim nomination when Kristin Gibson stepped down in March. Humes was appointed on April 22 but lost the seat a month ago after a union-led petition called for a special election.

Humes wondered why Bronstein hadn’t gone through all of this as a white woman. But I have to go through this as a black man.

Bronstein declined to comment on this report.

Voter records show Humes re-registered as a Republican several times over the past few months and ultimately chose No Party Preference on April 19, 2021. The school board race is non-partisan.

In December 2020, in fact, he listed his home address at 4653 Carmel Mountain Road, Suite 308/315. This is the address of a mailing annex in Del Mar.

On June 9, 2021, he filed a Form 410 to establish a fundraising committee called Friends of Ty Humes for San Dieguito UHSD Trustee Area 5. Certifying under penalty of perjury that the form was completed correctly, he entered his address under the number 11279 Senda Luna. Llena in San Diego.

On June 25, County Schools Superintendent Paul Gothold ordered the election of Zone 5 administrators for November 2 via a mail-in ballot. This area includes Carmel Valley and Pacific Highlands Ranch.

On Tuesday, Acting San Dieguito Schools Chief Lucile Lynch said she was unaware of Humes’ residency challenge until the Times of San Diego was informed.

The selection of Mr Humes took place prior to my appointment as acting superintendent, so I’m not aware of the information shared in the interviews, Lynch said via email.

Residency challenges to electoral candidates fall under the jurisdiction of the San Diego Registrar of Electors. With regard to challenges to the residency of sitting administrators, these issues fall under the jurisdiction of the district prosecutor’s office and the electoral code.

She noted a residency complaint against school board president Maureen Mo Muir by Duncan Brown, president of the San Dieguito Faculty Association.

The district immediately and proactively contacted the deputy district attorney who received a copy of Mr Brown’s email to provide the information necessary to address any concerns, she said. The trustee for trustee zone 1 [Muir] has also fully cooperated and the district attorneys office has now received information in response to Mr. Duncan’s complaint about this trustee.

She noted that a strong summer session of over 800 students was underway for a short summer with the school starting August 17.

My attention and the attention of our staff are better devoted to our students than the challenges that can be skillfully overcome by other people and entities, Lynch said.

The neighbor to the Torrey Hills home said they walked the neighborhood regularly.

I could see the front of the house, said the neighbor. I never saw (Humes minibus) parked there. I have the impression that since he filed these documents with the registrar of electors and became the provisional nominee, he was making an effort to be seen in the neighborhood.

Tuesday, Humes explained his registration file on the electoral rolls.

When I registered to vote after the sale of our family home in the divorce and custody battle, I entered my mailing address (lawyers advice to send all mail to mailing address) by mistake and that has been fixed, he wrote.

Subsequently, the district under the former superintendent [Robert] Haley and SDCOR verified my address, as is the process, when they applied for the vacant seat.

Humes did not explain what SDCOR stands for.
