WAYNE, Pa. (WPVI) – Severe storms that hit parts of Pennsylvania on Thursday – in the hours before Tropical Storm Elsa hit – tore power lines and cables, and even knocked over a tree on a house.
The National Weather Service said the damage was due to a microburst. They occur during thunderstorms and can produce destructive winds like a tornado, but they do not have the spin or rotation of a tornado.
Chopper 6 was on the damage in Wayne where massive trees were blown down by the storm. The impact shattered the branches as the trunk hit the ground.
“We thought, we wondered if there had been a tornado, but apparently not. I’m happy!” Wayne resident Grace Ziesing said.
A warning sign hangs on the front door of a house on Chamounix Road and the entrance has been barred with warning tape. The roof was damaged by a tree that cracked in half.
A neighbor heard the crackle.
“It happened really fast. All, maybe 20-30 seconds, a lot of rain at the same time,” said Will Johnston.
The clean-up started as quickly as the storm passed.
The sound of chainsaws could be heard within the three-block radius on Friday.
“A bunch of these telephone and utility poles were destroyed and they replaced them overnight,” Ziesing said. “Around 3 p.m., 3:30 p.m., we got our electricity back. “
A number of other trees also fell during the storm, but these houses failed.
No injuries were reported.
