Editor’s Note: This story contains a graphic account of an alleged sex crime.
Barkevious Mingo, an outside Falcons linebacker and nine-year NFL veteran, was arrested Thursday in a Dallas suburb and charged with indecency with a child – sexual contact, according to the Arlington Police Department. He surrendered “on his own in consultation with his lawyer” and was released after posting a $ 25,000 bond.
Mingo’s attorney, Lukas Garcia, made the following statement to SI via Mingo’s agent: “Tarrant County’s allegations against my client are completely unfounded. Barkevious Mingo is innocent. At this stage, our side has very limited information. What we do know is that these allegations date back over two years and are totally untrue. Mr. Mingo is the victim of a misrepresentation, and we believe he is motivated by money or other ulterior motives. We are confident when the truth is revealed my client will be fully exonerated. “
Sports Illustrated has learned that the charges stem from an alleged incident that occurred over the weekend of July 4, 2019 and brought to the attention of the Arlington PD in January 2021.
According to documents filed by Arlington PD regarding a search warrant and obtained by SI:
Mingo invited a teenage relative and the boy’s friend, also a teenager, to spend the day with him. Mingo took the boys to Six Flags Over Texas Amusement Park in Arlington and K1 Speed, a go-kart resort in the Dallas area. They had dinner at BJ’s restaurant, a popular local steakhouse. Mingo paid for everything, including a season pass to K1 Speed.
Mingo also gave the boys a shopping spree, paying for the items they chose on Nike.com. The parent’s friend chose a variety of t-shirts, shoes and shorts. The equipment was shipped to the boy at the address of his friend, Mingo’s family member.
On the night of July 4, 2019, the boys returned to the local hotel where Mingo was staying. According to documents obtained by Sports Illustrated, the boy fell asleep, but around 3 a.m. he woke up and noticed Mingo in bed with him. He “found it strange”, according to the documents, as the plan was for the two boys to sleep in a separate room from Mingo. He thought little about it and went back to sleep.
According to the document, “The victim was then awakened by [Mingo] pulling on her underwear. This happened for a few minutes until the suspect became more aggressive and pulled the victim’s underwear up to the shins. The victim said when this happened he was scared and pretended to be asleep. [Mingo] put lotion on the victim’s skin which burns and… rubs his penis up and down, between the victim’s buttocks.
When in January 2021, the boy’s mother filed a complaint with the local police, the case was turned over to a detective in the Child Crimes Unit of the Arlington Police Department. In February 2021, as part of the investigation, Arlington Police asked Tarrant County Judge David C. Hagerman for a search warrant to obtain Nike’s July 4, 2019 sales records, concerning three ordinances.
As the Arlington Police Detective put it forward in the request, “the evidence will corroborate the victim impact statements. In addition, it is known to [the detective] … That buying gifts for children is a known “readiness” behavior in cases of child sexual abuse. ”
SI learned that Nike had complied with this order.
Mingo has played for seven NFL teams, starting with the Browns, the franchise that selected him sixth in the 2013 Draft. He played in Super Bowl LI for the New England Patriots, recording two special teams tackles in victory.
In July 2019, he was a member of the Seahawks, who traded him to the Texans later that summer. He spent the 2020 season with the Bears and in March signed a one-year contract to join the Falcons.
A spokesperson for the Falcons team emailed the following statement: “Our organization has become aware of the allegations involving Barkevious Mingo today and is currently collecting information about this incident. The Falcons take the allegations very seriously and will continue to monitor the situation. “
