The England Football Association said it was “dismayed” and “disgusted” after racist trolls targeted Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka after the Euro 2020 final loss to Italy on Sunday.

All three missed the game as Italy won in penalties 3-2 after a tense final that ended 1-1 after extra time.

“We are disgusted that some of our squad – who gave their all for the shirt this summer – suffered discriminatory abuse online after tonight’s game,” the England FA tweeted.

“We stand in solidarity with our players.”

A separate statement said: “The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled at the online racism which has targeted some of our English players on social media.

“We couldn’t be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behavior is unwelcome to follow the team.”

London Metropolitan Police said they were investigating the “offensive and racist” posts.

“We are aware of a number of offensive and racist comments on social media directed at footballers after the # Euro2020 final,” he said in a tweet.

“This abuse is completely unacceptable, it will not be tolerated and it will be investigated.”

England players have taken a strong stand against racism during the tournament, kneeling ahead of their matches, including Sunday’s final.
