Prince William remained “disgusted” after English players were victims of racist abuse online after losing to Italy in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday (11.07.21).

The Duke of Cambridge blasted the “heinous behavior” of those who bombed Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho – who missed their penalties in the decisive shootout – with vile slurs and offensive emojis.

William – who is president of the FA – tweeted: “I am sickened by the racist abuse targeting England players after last night’s game.

“It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this heinous behavior.

“It must stop now and everyone involved must be held accountable.”

England manager Gareth Southgate also blasted the “unacceptable” comments.

He said: “This is just not what we stand for.

“We have been a beacon in bringing people together so that they can identify with the national team, and the national team represents everyone, and so this unity must continue.

“We have shown the power of our country when it comes together and has this energy and positivity together.

“Everyone has to remember when they support their team that they also represent England and have to represent what we stand for.

“We have had a positive effect on many areas of society, but we cannot affect everything – other people have responsibilities in these areas. We have to work collectively to constantly improve these things.”

The FA had already spoken out and insisted that those who left racist comments were “not welcome to follow the team.”

A spokesperson said: “The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism which has targeted some of our English players on social media.

“We couldn’t be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behavior is unwelcome to follow the team. We will do our utmost to support the players concerned while demanding the harshest penalties possible for any responsible person.

“We will continue to do all we can to eliminate discrimination, but we urge the government to act quickly and pass the appropriate legislation so that this abuse has real consequences.

“Social media companies must step up their efforts and take action to ban attackers from their platforms, collect evidence that could lead to prosecution and support the release of their platforms from this kind of heinous abuse.”

Metropolitan Police have confirmed they will investigate the abuse.
