Journalists are to blame for the chaos occurring in the country

Violence, vandalism and looting of shops continue in KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng by people suspected of being supporters of former President Jacob Zuma.

A protest that started in KwaZulu-Natal has spread to other parts of the country such as Gauteng.

Scenes of violence, vandalism and looting of shops in parts of Johannesburg have been occurring since Saturday July 10.

Most of the roads leading to and out of Jeppestown have been closed by protesters believed to be supporters of former President Jacob Zuma.

Listeners to the Clement Manyathela Show questioned whether the protests were justified, with some blaming reporters and the media for the chaos unfolding in the country.

I firmly believe that Zuma should be released from prison and I wonder if you (Clement) and other journalists are happy with the chaos you have caused in this country. For weeks you have laughed at Mr. Zuma and now you expect the military to solve your problems. Why should Mr. Zuma remain in jail when all the former presidents of this country have never set foot in jail for the wrongs they have committed?

I don’t see why journalists are blamed for someone who defined the Constitutional Court. The protests that have collapsed and continue cannot be characterized as peaceful protests. It is terrorism. When people fear leaving their homes to earn an income; when they hear gunshots all evening and there is a strong police presence in the area, for me it is not a protest.

Protesters in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng demand the release of the former president.

We keep saying that people are protesting and looting because of the arrests of the former president, but I disagree. People use this as an excuse to meet their personal needs by looting stores and torching trucks.

Joseph, the appellant

The ANC has created rogue elements that believe themselves to be above the law. I have heard people like lawyer Dali Mpofu, a fully professional lawyer, say that if the former president is arrested there will be blood in the streets. It is all orchestrated and the whole country is being held hostage by someone who simply does not want to respect the constitution.

If we had the opportunity to defend our Constitution, it is now. We cannot have a situation where we are intimidated by someone who just had to come and report on what he did while he was in power.

Mpho, calling

The former president was sentenced to 15 months in prison for failing to comply with the decision of the Constitutional Court, ordering him to comply with the investigation into the state capture.
