Are women the only ones interested in luxury items?

This was one of the questions some Filipinos asked online when Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental 2021 Cinderella “Cindy” Obeita was asked about luxury items in the Q&A segment of the beauty pageant on Sunday.

During the highly anticipated portion of the contest, famous fashion designer Michael Cinco asked the 25-year-old tourism operations officer from Cagayan de Oro the following question:

“How important are luxury items like bags, clothes, jewelry to a woman when the national economy is down and struggling?

Cindy responded by saying that women always have a choice.

Here is the full text of the Cagayan de Oro bet response:

“In life, we always find ourselves at the crossroads of choices. Women always have the choice to prioritize luxury items as we face a pandemic and we also have the choice to embrace a concept of a new beauty that meets the needs of the times, adapts to change. the times. ”

“And I think I will choose to be that woman who understands the problems of the Philippines, the problems of my community, so that we can uplift each other and I will be that kind of woman who will comfort the afflicted and the afflicted on the comfortable.

The candidate’s response was admired by pageant enthusiasts who found it “magnificent”.

It’s Cagayan de Oro for me a round of questions and answers !!! Starting with the idea of the crossroads of choices, comparing those choices and choosing what suits a Binibini that she really is. Superb. # BinibiningPilipinas2021 pic.twitter.com/65WoUvacKq

However, some have criticized the issue, claiming it was “misogynistic” or something prejudiced against women.

“The question is very misogynistic. It’s as if men don’t buy luxury items either. LMAO, ”a Twitter user commented in response to a question for the beauty queen.

“Why would the question imply that only women are luxurious. LMAO, ”commented another Internet user.

“A lot of men buy luxury brands, but you don’t see them asking these questions,” another Twitter user noted.

Another Filipino netizen said the question reminded him of how American singer Ariana Grande was once asked by a radio DJ about makeup and phones.

“The question is so misogynistic and sexist. It reminded me of this question to Ariana Grande about choosing between a phone or a makeup. Anyway, Ms. Obeita responded with grace and intelligence! I would love to see a candidate answer questions like this so they don’t ask those kinds of questions next time, ”she tweeted.

Ariana in 2015 appeared on a radio station where one of the two DJs asked her the following: “If you could use makeup or your phone one last time, what would you choose?”

“Are these men assuming that the girls should choose between them?” Replied the singer.

The Hollywood Reporter of the same year said that women attending the Oscars received more questions about looks and appearances such as fashion and jewelry than their male counterparts.

The Binibining Pilipinas crowned a new set of beauty queens on Sunday who will represent the country in various international competitions.

Hannah Arnold of Masbate won the title of Miss International Philippines, Samantha Panlilio of Cavite won the title of Miss Grand International Philippines and Maureen Montagne of Batangas won the title of Miss Globe Philippines.

Gabrielle Basiano of Eastern Samar was named the first runner-up while Meiji Cruz de Valenzuela won the second title.
