Yesterday, in an extremely close match, Italy beat England in the European Championship. England’s participation in the final marked the first time in 55 years that the nation had come so close to victory. The match ended in overtime, with the winner determined by a penalty shootout. After the game, however, there was a horrendous wave of racist comments on social media, directed against black English players.
Racist attacks flooded the social media accounts of Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, the three accomplished British players who missed their shots on goal in the high-pressure shootout. These abuses have led to condemnation at all levels, including from the English Football Association and Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Prince William, who is president of the English Football Association, also took to social media to denounce the attacks.
“I am sickened by the racist abuse targeting England players after last night’s game,” the Duke of Cambridge tweeted. “It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this heinous behavior. It must stop now and everyone involved must be held accountable.”

The prince signed the tweet with “W” indicating that the message came directly from him. Along with the conviction, these racist attacks also prompted an investigation by the London Metropolitan Police. Police said they would investigate “offensive and racist comments on social media directed at footballers” after the championship game, according to the New York Times.
The Duke of Cambridge attended last night’s game alongside his wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and eldest son Prince George. After the team’s loss, the Prince expressed his disappointment, but also praised the team for a valiant effort.
“@England you have all come this far, but unfortunately this time was not our day,” he tweeted. “You can all hold your head up high and be so proud of yourselves – I know there is more to come.”
