Former Nickelodeon actress Lindsey Shaw comes under fire for making fun of a viral TikTok created by black creators.
The video, which Shaw has since deleted, with the watch reacting negatively to the recent TikTok trend. TikToker @notnotcandace reposted the original video, in which Shaw says: Hey, how are you? What is that ? then mockingly shows the dance of the video.
Immediately, people took issue with the video, commenting on the reposted TikTok:
It’s called vibrate but she wouldn’t know since she couldn’t even do it right 😳 wrote @serixdre.
For anyone confused: She praised her white friend Devon for setting the trend but insulted black designers, @ bgroyal808 commented, referring to Shaw’s Ned’s Declassified School co-star Survival Guide Devon Werkheiser who participated in the trend.
Under Werkheiser’s interpretation of the trend, Shaw commented: “Get it !!!!” with several laughing emojis.
Another user posted a duet with the original video, captioned: Why moze had a problem with dis, referring to Shaws Moze’s character in Neds.
Woah, black people are having fun, hope nobody who climaxed in Neds Declassified School Survival Guide doesn’t like that, user @rafiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii sarcastically says.
Some people disagreed with the hate, saying Shaw’s actions weren’t necessarily racist.
It doesn’t all have to do with racing. you are all so extra on god, @mayanazzi said.
I don’t see what this has to do with race. If they were white, she would still do the same thing: make fun of the dance, @ user7714834740233 added.
Shaw then posted on Instagram Stories early Monday morning in response to criticism.
Crying, Shaw says in a series of stories:
OK, I just have to say right now that the hate in my inbox isn’t OK, OK? I didn’t mean anything at all, I learn everyday like everyone else I think and that kind of hate just needs to evaporate from the planet no matter who it is directed to.
Crocodile tears? No, man, like, it’s like, my soul over there. If you know anything about what I stand for or what I believe in, then you know it’s not. I’m sorry you were offended.
I think we all need to vibrate higher for the future, and I know I will continue to learn. I think, for example, that for my own sanity, I have to take a step back from social media. I felt a bit like that anyway. But it’s like, I’m not here to offend or belittle anyone; I thought the Millennial and Gen Z thing was a thing on TikTok. The intention wasn’t that serious, yall. So uh, yeah, I just have to leave in a little while, but I like you, I love you, and I’ll be back. And I hope to know more and I hope we all have a little more compassion and understanding.
She signs with a peace sign.
The apologies haven’t rubbed everyone the right way.
She laughed at the black ppl and cried over his hateful comments on instagram lol, @notnotcandance wrote in a quilt video. White tears are dangerous, says the legend.
And the fact that she turned her comments off says it all. No responsibility, commented @cheerfulbettakeeper.
Shaw, who also played a role in Pretty Little Liars, has disabled comments on his Instagram and TikTok accounts.
Another TikToker, @viciouspinky, posted a green screen video in which she pretends to be asleep while footage of Shaw crying plays in the background. The caption says “Yawn”.

“It’s funny because she was the one who started off with the hate and now that she’s called it is the ‘where is the unit’,” @teyonnaaustin said.
Werkheiser, who has one million subscribers on TikTok, posted a video responding to Shaw’s controversy, explaining that the situation was “complicated” and arguing that there were several things to consider when talking about it.
He begins by discussing the persistent problem of neglected black creators on TikTok, despite being the pioneers of the app.
“There is pain there, and I understand that,” he says in the video. “And this generation, we live in a time when people are mobilizing for this.”
Then he addresses Shaw’s TikTok mocking the viral trend, calling the video “very unnecessary” and acknowledging that his response to the backlash was defensive and reactionary.
“If you know Lindsey personally, you know she hates all kinds of things Black, white, brown, popular, unpopular and can be a reactionary and defensive person,” Werkheiser says. “But she’s also kind-hearted and faces personal issues and challenges that none of you know anything about.”
This combination created what Werkheiser calls “perceived racial bias,” and he thinks it’s an opportunity to educate Shaw on his ignorance. However, instead, he says she received hateful DMs telling her to kill herself. Werkheiser concluded by saying that while it is important to resist prejudice, he will also stand up for the welfare of his friend.
“Friends aren’t canceled in real life, and life is complicated,” he said.
The Daily Dot has contacted Shaw for comment.
