Petition by Ogyeedom

The above quotes, which contain a wave of vile allegations against the Chief Justice, were precipitated by a complaint filed by Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta IV to the GLC regarding the conduct of Akwasi Afrifa who was his lawyer.

Ogyeedom said his former lawyer acted in violation of GLC rules when he dealt with the Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta VI v Ghana Telecommunications Co. Ltd case by suggesting to him [Ogyeedom] to provide an amount of US $ 100,000 to allow him to do some ways and means (gymnastics) on the case so that we can obtain a favorable decision.

Ogyeedom said he was beyond belief that the Supreme Court would rule in his favor, but had to respond to his counsel’s request because he was new to the justice system.

But he later realized that he had been cheated and after firing Akwasi Afrifa, his lawyer struggled to recover the payments made to him.

So I fired him from the case and asked him to refund the money, but he has since refunded me US $ 25,000, leaving a balance of US $ 75,000 owed to me. All efforts to recover the amount have failed, said Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta VI.

Ogyeedom Responds to Akwasi Afrifas’ Allegations

Shortly after GhanaWeb published the story of Kwasi Afrifas’ response to his complaint to the GLC, Ogyeedom’s lawyers published a response in which they removed him from all allegations against him, the lawyer Akoto Ampaw and the Chief Justice.

Ogyeedom said he had at no time in his life had any interaction with the Chief Justice and that all of the claims made by lawyer Kwasi Afrifa did not hold up.

I unequivocally deny any allegations of intentional or actual bribery against any judge, including the Chief Justice, whom I have never met or known personally, other than seeing him at a distance from the court, the reply said in part.

I have since requested a copy of said response to my petition against lawyer Afrifa in which these fabrications and allegations are contained and will respond appropriately to General Legal Council upon receipt thereof.

Chief Justice Refers Case to CID

The chief justice, in a statement written on his behalf by the judiciary, also refuted the allegations made against him by Kwasi Afrifa.

He stated that outside of the courtroom where he usually hears the name of Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta VI when his case is called, he has never met him.

He further referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the case and initiate criminal proceedings if necessary.

His Excellency the Chief Justice is saddened that, without any evidence, his name has been dragged into this sordid and potentially criminal case.

“His Lordship further states that he neither asked for nor received money from anyone to influence a decision, the letter said.

ASEPA CHRAJ petitions

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability has asked the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice to investigate this issue.

The petition, signed by ASEPA Executive Director Mensah Thompson, noted that the allegation against Chief Justice Kwasi Annin-Yeboah is a serious matter that requires critical attention.

Parts of the statement read: “We are writing to invoke the jurisdiction of the CHRAJ in accordance with section 7 (1) (a) (f) of the 1993 CHRAJ Act, Act 456 and Section 281 (a ) (e) to investigate the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Judge Kwasi Anin-Yeboah for allegations of bribery and corruption. An allegation that Nana Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta VI revealed to her former lawyer, Mr. Kwesi Afrifa Esq, that the chief justice demanded a bribe of US $ 5 million from him to help him win a case he had before the Supreme Court
