There were few surprises in the 2021 Emmy nominations, honoring a year when a number of former contenders, including the winner of last year’s drama HBOs Succession, were even in contention due to production delays. pandemic. But the races are tight in several categories, although there are clear favorites. Here’s a breakdown of some key matches in the packed comedy, drama, and limited-series categories. As usual, with a few exceptions (namely Saturday Night Live), broadcast networks might as well stay at home.
The comedy
Simply put, this is the Ted Lassos year. The adorable Apple TV comedy + Fish Out of Water is the favorite of the series and lead actor (Jason Sudeikis), and toss a coin for which out of six nominated supporting players will get their own trophy. (My money on Hannah Waddington as team owner and Brett Goldstein as gruff team captain.)
The only serious competition comes from two breakouts from HBO Max: Hacks, where the wonderful Jean Smart simply has to win as a struggling Las Vegas comedy legend; and The Flight Attendant, with Kaley Cuocos, the tipsy damsel in distress, is a solid second place.
The surprise: the nomination in the best series for the insipid Emily in Paris (why not Younger if we take the road of Darren Star?)
The disappointment: Among many others, no love for NBC has deplored Zoeys’ extraordinary playlist, underrated (and also canceled) CBS The Unicorn and Apples Terrific Mythic Quest.
I wish they’d stood out: Girls5Evas Rene Elise Goldsberry (although she got a nod for Hamilton), Made for Loves Cristin Milioti, and my longest deserving shot, Resident Aliens Alan Tudyk, whose the performance of bravery as an alien in human skin is a masterpiece of sustained invention.
Drama
Again, there’s a Netflixs favorite in The Crown for its Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana double-twist. Gillian Anderson (Thatcher) and Emma Corrin (Diana) are favored in their categories, although I’d love to see Olivia Colman recognized for her subtle take on the middle-aged queen. Josh OConnor, who won a Golden Globe as tormented Prince Charles, has tougher competition with dynamic Poses Billy Porter (a former winner), charismatic Reg-Jean Page of Bridgertons and even melancholy revisionist Perry Masons Matthew Rhys (a former winner for the Americans).
Perhaps the most high-profile nominated show is Lovecraft Country, a daring but messy mix of racial allegory and horror that HBO surprisingly canceled a week ago. With 18 nominations, including five for his cast, overtaking Wunmi Mosaku in support was a mistake Lovecraft should have been a keeper. (I wonder if HBO is rethinking its decision.)
Pleasant surprise: the appointment as lead actress for trans actress Mj Rodriguez de Pose. Well done !
Shocker: Amazon Prime Videos’ subversive superhero series The Boys joining genre favorite Lovecraft and The Mandalorian in the race for best series.
I wish they had been noticed: Amanda Collin and Abubakar Salim, the android heroes of HBO Max’s awesome Raised by Wolves; the main cast of This Is Us (although congratulations to Chris Sullivan); and for the guest actress, a posthumous nod to Diana Rigg would have been welcome for her hilarious eccentric in PBS All Creatures Great and Small.
Limited series
In many ways, this is where the action takes place and where a lot of the best work is done on TV. The top five limited series are worthy, and I’d be baffled if I had to pick a favorite from WandaVision, Mare of Easttown, The Underground Railroad, I May Destroy You, and alleged favorite, Netflixs The Queens Gambit. I’m delighted that WandaVision has done so well, leading the pack with 23 nominations (many of which are technical) including for the engaging tracks and the amazing Kathryn Hahnyes, the catchy song by Agatha All Along has been nominated.
The biggest and most inexplicable snub of the year: Ignoring Ethan Hawkes’ electrifying turn as abolitionist John Brown in Showtimes The Good Lord Bird. If he had been named, I would have considered him a loser.
More thoughts:
Strongest Category of the Year: Lead Actress in a Limited Series / Film, with The Queens Gambits Anya-Taylor Joy favored in an incredible lineup including Mares Kate Winslet, Multi-Hyphenated Destroys Michaela Coel, Genius: Arethas amazing Cynthia Erivo, and versatile WandaVisions Elizabeth Olsen. All of them deserve to win, and I hope whoever gives a nod to the remarkable and overlooked Railroads Thuso Mbedu. With seven acting nominations among her gifted ensemble, showing Hamiltons looks like a rehearsal for the 2016 Tony Awards. Too many hairstylists have perhaps been defeating Nicole Kidmans because she failed to secure a nomination alongside the co-starring Hugh Grant for HBOs The Undoing. In the always underwhelming category of TV movies, I’m giving HBO a compelling recent history drama Oslo a slight edge over Amazon Prime Videos period romance Sylvies Love, and how FXs Fargo completely disappeared from the scene. card this year?
and finally
Hi Team Coco, as TBS Conan earns its first variety-talk category nomination since its first season, just after the show sailed into the sunset. Goes to show that it’s never too late.
The 73rd Emmy Awards, Sunday September 19, 8 / 7c, CBS
