Do you miss your Marguerite? Local alcohol shortage probably to blame

CHARLOTTE, NC – Many people are missing out on their margaritas as an alcohol shortage sets in in Mecklenburg County.

The shelves at ABC stores in the Charlotte area are empty, and bar owners are struggling to get certain types of alcohol to satisfy their growing crowds.

I went to another store earlier today and they were a bit short of everything, said Scott McAdams, a shopper from East Charlotte.

Alcohol, and especially tequila, brandy, and vodka, are the latest shortage of products. The impact being felt by repeat customers.

Some shelves seem a bit more empty, McAdams said.

Restaurant and bar owners are also jostling. .

Last week we ordered 150 bottles and at our selected store we only got two, said Brian Wilson, co-owner of Tipsy Burro Saloon.

He says he has to go to five or six stores to fill only a fraction of his order.

There appears to be a distribution issue between Raleigh and the local ABC stores in Mecklenburg County, Wilson said.

He says truck drivers limited to delivering shipments are causing backups. There is also a shortage of glass impacting tequila bottling as well as an influx of demand from people in bars and restaurants.

If we weren’t able to get things over and over we have to run, it will eventually start to affect the consumer, Wilson said.

According to the North Carolina ABC Commission:

Suppliers can sometimes find it difficult to keep all products in stock at all times. Many businesses have reopened in recent months, creating additional demand as well.

For no, consumers may need to broaden their horizons or be prepared to wait.

People are just going to have to be patient, and hopefully we can put everything back together and get everyone the alcohol they want when they want it, Wilson said.

The Mecklenburg County ABC Board of Directors said that since alcohol is highly regulated, statues have been put in place to protect consumers from price gouging. Prices are therefore unlikely to change much once supply picks up.
