Wisconsin recently passed its biennial state budget. Despite some major disagreements, Gov. Tony Evers signed off on the Republicans drafted budget last week. But the budget is not without controversy on both sides of the aisle.

“The two issues that most people think of here when they read and think about the budget are funding for education and the huge tax cut that has been enacted,” said Molly Beck, a journalist who covers the budget. state and government policy for the Milwaukee Journal. Sentinel.

Although the Republicans-drafted budget increases funding for education in Wisconsin, it fails to fully fund it. Beck says education officials fear they will be forced to cut services and jobs. Education advocates also pointed out that the state had an unprecedented $ 4.4 billion in tax windfall to use in this budget, and that Republicans used it to fund a tax cut. .

Republicans have also sought to add about $ 500 million of those taxes to the state’s rainy day fund, which Evers has vetoed from the budget.

“It’s something Republicans have criticized ever since,” Beck says.
