Zendaya Responds To Criticism Over Lola Bunny’s Less Sexualized Design In New ‘Space Jam’ Movie

Lola traded in the crop top she wore in the first movie for a basketball jersey, with filmmakers saying they didn’t want to sexualize the cartoon character. While the move was applauded by some fans, others were outraged.

Zendaya, who plays Lola in the new movie, told Entertainment Weekly that when asked to play Lola for the first time, she didn’t know people would be upset by the updated look of the characters.

I didn’t know it was going to be as important as it was, she laughed. But I understand, because he’s a lovable character. It is very important, so I understand.

Zendaya, 24, who said she grew up watching the original film because of her family’s love for basketball, explained that Lolas’ character resonated with her because of what she represented, and not because of his appearance.

I’ve always liked Lola because she’s the only girl on the squad, which sort of holds her for the ladies and she’s also an incredible player, the Euphoria star said. I think in this re-imagining of who she is, it leans a bit more into that, the fact that she has these skills and that she’s an MVP.
