Unions allege harassment at Luxottica factory in McDonough

The unions say the company used an app called LiveSafe to send anti-union messages while defaming organized work on websites created by the company. These messages warned that workers could lose their wages and benefits if they formed a union or even started an organizing campaign.

The unions have been in contact with the workers, but do not yet have a recruitment drive in the factory, CWA spokeswoman Beth Allen said.

In a statement distributed by the groups that filed the complaint, worker Lisa Ragsdale said she and other employees wanted to form a union so they have a voice at work.

We come together to fight for respect, safe working conditions and fair wages, the statement said.

The company says it is not anti-union.

We have strong and productive relationships with unions around the world, wherever our employees choose to be represented by them, according to a company statement. In Atlanta, our employees overwhelmingly voted in favor of a direct relationship with us over union representation less than three years ago.

The OECD is a consortium of 38 countries that includes the United States. Although the organization has no executive authority, it helps set international standards for social, economic and environmental policies.

The complaint is being filed with the OECD because Luxotticas’ parent company has a good working relationship with its European workforce, which is largely unionized, CWA spokeswoman Beth Allen said.

Workers at the Luxottica plant have asked the CWA for help and advice, she said. It may take some time for workers to feel comfortable sharing their concerns publicly, especially in the face of a long-term bullying campaign like the one Luxottica has waged.
