Critics question application of new Florida protest law

[ad_1]

Protesters across Florida have shown solidarity with Cubans calling for an end to the country’s Communist dictatorship. In one case, they blocked a freeway in Miami this week.

Meanwhile, critics of a new Florida law said it was clearly not enforced against Cuban protesters. Florida ACLU Executive Director Micah Kubic believes the law only criminalizes certain voices.

As the events of this week demonstrate, this is a law that is truly subjective and allows law enforcement to decide when they are going to protect the First Amendment and when they are not, and that is one big problems with that; is that they’re so subjective, Kubic said Thursday on First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross.

Among other things, the new law makes it a third-degree crime to block traffic or obstruct roads during a demonstration.

Governor Ron DeSantis made it a priority during the Black Lives Matter protests last summer. Now groups, including the Northside Coalition of Jacksonville, are seeking an injunction in federal court to try to block the law.

Kubic’s full interview can be heard during Thursday’s First Coast Connect recall with Melissa Ross at 8 p.m. on WJCT News 89.9.
