SEATTLE – Former Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers star Richard Sherman was arrested on Wednesday after authorities said he tried to break into the home of a family member in the suburbs of Seattle and had fought with police, who used police dogs to apprehend him.
Sherman was incarcerated at the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle just after 6 a.m. on suspicion of alleged burglary domestic violence, according to online records.
It was not immediately clear if Sherman had an attorney who could speak on his behalf. His initial hearing was not expected until Thursday.
A resident called 911 just before 2 a.m., saying someone was trying to force entry into a house in Redmond, Wash., Police said.
A police statement says that officers found Sherman outside the house and that he fought with them during his arrest, “resulting in the deployment of a Redmond K9 team to help to take control “.
Police said the Washington State Patrol is also investigating a hit-and-run accident related to Sherman. Before arriving home, he is suspected of having hit a cement barrier on a busy national road in the region and escaping from his badly damaged vehicle.
The NFL said in a statement about Sherman that it “is investigating any incident involving law enforcement and if there was a violation of the personal conduct policy, the player would be subject to disciplinary action.”
Sherman became a Seattle sports legend for seven seasons with the Seahawks. The cornerback was a star in their race to a 2014 Super Bowl victory, making a saving play to deflect a pass in the NFC Championship game against the 49ers.
He left the Seahawks after the 2017 season and played three seasons with San Francisco. The 33-year-old is now a free agent.
The NFL Players Association said the union was monitoring the situation.
“We have been made aware of the arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged incident of domestic violence and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of all involved,” a union statement said.
Sherman would likely make a first court appearance on Thursday afternoon, said Casey McNerthney, spokesperson for the King County District Attorney’s Office.
Redmond Police have scheduled a press conference for 1:30 p.m.
