Allegations against northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, such as “genocide” and “concentration camps,” are unfounded, German Green Party member Juergen Kurz said recently after a trip to the region.

Kurz, in an interview with German online magazine Telepolis, questioned the sources of these accusations, saying they “are not falling from the sky”.

Many officials and journalists try to visit Xinjiang with a presumption of guilt mentality, he said.

“They demanded to be able to visit these“ concentration camps ”. The Chinese then said they didn’t exist, which is why they couldn’t show them, ”Kurz said.

Kurz made his trip to Xinjiang in May and said he got a glimpse of the so-called “concentration camps”, which are in fact vocational education centers.

“It is part of the poverty reduction policy. In China, such programs are executed very strongly by the government, provincial governments, cities and municipalities,” Kurz said.

He added that these education centers were also used to de-radicalize extremists.

“The radicalization of people was happening. The most accessible people for extremism are young men who have no professional outlook and don’t know what to do,” Kurz said.

Speaking about the “genocide” claim, Kurz said it was also a “framing” on the part of Western countries, as the Uyghur population has grown and has a higher birth rate than the United States. Han ethnicity.
