Why did England withdraw their medals? Players criticized for removing euro gongs after final defeat

[ad_1]

Italy were crowned the winners of Euro 2020 after beating England on penalties at Wembley on Sunday night.

England took the lead after just two minutes thanks to a Luke Shaw goal, but Leonardo Bonucci equalized for Italy in the second half.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka then missed penalties, putting an end to dreams of a first-ever European Championship victory for England.

The English players received a guard of honor from the Italians as they collected their finalist medals after the match.

But many of them, including Rashford, Sancho, Shaw, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Kyle Walker, immediately withdrew the medals presented to them by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

The players didn’t want to remember their loss, despite a strong performance against the four-time world champions.

However, they have been criticized by some on social media for a perceived lack of respect, while others have urged the team to be proud of their achievements in the competition.

I really don’t understand why the English players took the medals so quickly and with contempt. Bad atmosphere x sport. They played well throughout the tournament. Period.

A week ago, they were overwhelmed to have reached the final. It was an incredible achievement. Be proud. Hand out the medals.

I’m very patriotic and of course wanted England to win and I’m disappointed they didn’t

BUT First, we looked like sore losers when they immediately pulled their medals

And another reason why I don’t like football is that once again football thugs are out in force on social media

The lack of respect shown by the English players by removing these medals.

Adrian Weckler (@adrianweckler) July 11, 2021 What did Gareth Southgate say after the game?

It’s up to me, England manager Gareth Southgate said of the missed penalties.

I chose the shooters based on what they did in training.

No one is alone. We won together as a team and it’s up to all of us not to be able to win this match.

In terms of penalties, it’s my decision and it’s totally up to me.

What did Harry Kane say after the game?

Captain Harry Kane said after the loss: The boys couldn’t have given more.

Penalties are the worst thing in the world when you lose them. It’s been a fantastic tournament, we should be proud and hold our heads up high, but it’s going to hurt now.

It’s going to hurt for a while, but we were on the right track and we were building. I hope we can make progress next year.

We played against a very good team and got off to a perfect start. Maybe we fell a little too deep, sometimes when you score so early it’s easy to absorb the pressure and hang on. They had a lot of ball, but we looked pretty in control.

We didn’t create too many chances, they got the breakthrough on a set piece and after that it was probably 50/50. We had a few half chances in overtime, then the penalties are penalties. We went through our process and the boys did all they could, but it just wasn’t our night.

Anyone can miss a penalty. We win together, we lose together and we are doing well. It will give us more motivation to do well at the World Cup next year.
