Rising COVID cases in Georgia and Chatham County, Delta variant blamed

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Chatham County Commissioners heard bad news on Friday regarding the number of COVID-19 cases.

“Unfortunately, we are starting to see an increase in cases not only statewide but in Chatham County,” said Chris Rustin, administrator of the Chatham County Department of Health.

“Over the past 14 days, we’ve seen a 74% increase in positive cases statewide,” Ruskin said.

He said cases had declined quite significantly in recent weeks, but the state was affected by the highly transmissible Delta variant.

“Almost half of the cases, around 43%, occur in young adults, and this is not surprising because this is one of the most difficult populations that we have tried to vaccinate,” said Ruskin.

He said 36% of people aged 18 to 39 had received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The number of cases in Chatham County has doubled in the past two weeks, from 53 cases on July 1 to 111 cases on July 15.

“When you look at all the hospitalization data, almost all of the deaths that are happening right now are among unvaccinated people,” Ruskin told county officials.

He also said tests have jumped 20%, which may indicate more people are experiencing symptoms and / or more people are hearing about the increase in cases and trying to determine if they have been exposed.

He urges the commissioners to continue monitoring the situation and those who are not vaccinated to get vaccinated.

“This certainly appears to be the start of a worrying trend,” Ruskin said. “So people should always wear masks when appropriate and respect social distancing. “
