TIRUVANAMALAI: A 31-year-old farmer is believed to have died from electric shock a day after being chased by a police team near Kalambur in Tiruvannamalai district after complaints of sand smuggling. Angry relatives of the deceased organized a roadblock, alleging that police excesses led to his death.
M Murali, a resident of Pettaithope in Mandakolathur, was found dead along a river in Vambalur with burns on Friday. His relatives recovered the body and organized a funeral. However, Polur police went to his home and wanted to collect the body for an autopsy, which his family objected to.
Alleging police excesses leading to his death, they resorted to a blockade by placing the body in the middle of the road. Police Superintendent Pawan Kumar Reddy and Extra SP Ashok Kumar rushed to the scene and appeased protesters before taking the body for an autopsy.
Although his relatives have expressed doubts about his death, police say he suffered an electric shock after coming into contact with an electrified fence. “The cause of death is undoubtedly an electric shock. The autopsy also confirmed the electrocution, ”SP Pawan Kumar Reddy told Express.
Sources said Murali and another person fled the scene when police arrived at the scene, leaving their oxcart behind on Thursday evening. However, the next day, the duo went to the police station and showed up for questioning. An investigation took place and they were released.
